NOTES:
Says mrskin:
At first I didn't know what to make of this recording. On the one hand the separation and clarity of the instruments sounded like a soundboard, while the ambience and clearly heard crowd noise made me think it might also be an excellent audience recording, or perhaps a sbd/audience composite. Half way through d2t10 (Prenda del Alma) the sound transitions to a purely audience recording. I talked to Dan Gale ....

Says Dan Gale:
Virtually every show at the Catalyst was secretly recorded from the Sbd on cassette through about '89 or so by some of the house folks. Mark Persic sent me DAT copies of these shows from the Sbd made from ~2-3gen cassettes he had but the quality was noticeably degraded. They also have circulated over the years in varying quality and completeness, presumably from other folks that got cassette copies along the way. A couple years ago a friend of mine in SC met the guy who had all the masters from this and everything else recorded there - he had them all stored on hard drives collecting dust. Slow but sure he did his best to get some of this stuff out of him and managed to get the 11/16/86 and 8/5/87 shows - I have CDR copies of these straight from the source - the 11/16/86 show was recorded on a 4-track cassette deck: one channel was Sbd left, one was Sbd right, one was vocal mix and one was some sort of audience mix for ambiance. The 8/5/87 show was just a standard 2-track cassette master - it was missing the last 4.5 songs, which I provided to my friend from Mark Persic's audience master so he could create a complete CD copy.

Says mrskin:
This is obviously the whole show, so the original source would likely be this friend of Dan's who compiled the 2 sources. I have not been able, however, to work out how many generations removed from this source my CD copy is. Regardless, it is a fine-sounding show. Enjoy.
