General Notes:

As requested, this show (which came in a close second place in the voting from
Sick Tidbits #1) is a matrix of two sources that are not great on their own,
but together they work very nicely, even a better combo (IMO) than the show
from 3 nights earlier at Manor Downs (Sick Bits Vol. 11), which has both a
better SBD and AUD, but for some reason the combination doesn't sound as
sweet as this one.  Don't get me wrong, both shows are amazing.

The FOB AUD is a vast improvement over a widely circulated AUD, which is used
as the patch on the SBD source; however, the FOB suffers from previously
employed NR to the point where some phasiness is noticeable even when coupled
with the SBD.  It also has some harsh mids around 2k which needed cutting.
The SBD is balanced with everyone in the mix, but like most boards from this
era, it's heavy in the mids.  Aside from the fact that the SBD is lightly
compressed with SBEs on every track, plus the AUD has some harsh mids
and heavy NR, amazingly the two sources work well.  The only bummer is that
there is no SBD after the cut in Stella for the rest of the show, so no matrix.
Also, there is only about 2.5 minutes of Cassidy in SBD (multiple cuts).

This show is a true classic, featuring an incredible Half-Step-> Franklin's
(one of the best transitions into Franklin's out of any song), a cool
Shakedown with some awesome Brent piano, a rare first set Womer R and a rare
second set TLMD (only 3 in '82), and an inspired Let It Grow.  Pretty much
every Jerry tune shines, including the Space-> He's Gone which is the beginning
of at least 35 minutes of music in the key of E.  The encore, Casey Jones,
is one of only two played in '82, and it's also stashed for almost 2 years.

Comments from Deadbase:

- "I've never been to the Greek Theater in Berkeley, but the Starlight seems
to me to be as close to the Greek as a midwesterner can get." "...the stage
is framed by castle-style towers on either side, covered by ivy and with a
   distinct Medieval feel."

Reviews from archive.org:

- "My girlfriend and I were following the Dead around for a couple weeks of this
tour but certainly this one was the best show we saw. What a beautiful venue.
The crowd was wonderful. We'd been a bit disappointed with Jerry's '40th Show'
at Zoo Ampitheater, though that was actually a pretty decent gig but this one
blew us out of our seats. Really the power of the show can't be transmitted
   through a recording."

- "104 degrees that day and the place was electric...every song was played tight
and flowed from to the next.."

- "This whole show smokes: from the raging 1/2 Step>Franklin's Tower right through
ALL of the 2nd set. I would give almost anything to have been there this night
   ... 5 stars for performance."

Editing Notes:

- Pitch
Both sources were pitched differently, the AUD being the sharpest by far,
with a lot of fluctuation.  I used the SBD as my master timeline
and pitch referenced the AUD to it. For set I, the AUD had to be pitched
down between -.20 (20 cents) and -.37 (37 cents).  In set II, the AUD had to
be pitched down between -.01 (1 cent) and -.08 (8 cents) for Shakedown>Samson,
but for TLMD, LIG>Drums the AUD was pitched up about the same range of amount.
After the cut in Drums in the AUD source the pitch was brought down between
-.07 and -.42 cents to achieve synch and pitch correction - 1.00 being
100 cents which is a semitone. The SBD is close to A=440, but it also
strays during each set, and granted both masters are from cassettes, so
there are bound to be pitch fluctuations throughout the show, which made it
a hard one to synch.

- Synch
Because of the speed fluctuation within a given source, multiple edits
were performed to keep the sources synched.  Because the SBD was my
master pitch and time ref, the AUD was synched to the SBD (too many
edits to list).

- Sonic Quality/Matrix ratio
The only dynamic processing I employed was a little EQ to the AUD source,
cutting 2.5k about 1 dB to minimize the annoying midrange from the
previously employed NR; The SBD got a similar treatment, albeit less cut,
and only for the first set.  Also, I applied Waves L2 (limiter) to the master
2 buss to keep things contained.  All I was trying to do here is to add some
dimension to the SBD by using the ambience of the AUD. The result is not as lively
as an indoor recording, but it's a clear recording with some phase present due
to the condition of the AUD. Hopefully, it's somewhat close to how it sounded at
the show.  If I had to guess, the SBD/AUD ratio would be somewhere between 2.5:1
and 3:1.

- Edits
The following are places where the SBD and AUD had splices, holes or
incomplete coverage in reference to the final matrix timeline. Not captured here
in the edit list, but certainly worth noting, is that the SBD had sector boundary
errors on every track somewhere in the lineage, resulting in about 29 milliseconds
between tracks being lost.  These were not covered by the AUD, but rather spliced
together and covered up.

SBD:
d1t01 (0:00 - 0:33) - missing
d1t02 (3:23 - 3:24) - dropout (increased AUD by 4.4 dB)

d1t08 (0:59 - 4:34) - missing
d1t08 (5:16 - 5:36) - missing

d1t05>6 (4:35 - 0:05) - missing
d1t06 (5:46 - 6:10) - missing (tuning)
d1t07 (8:00 - 8:01) - missing (crowd)
d1t08 (6:03 - 6:21) - missing (crowd/tuning)
d2t01 (0:00 - 0:18) - missing (crowd/tuning)
d2t06 (0:20 - 0:23) - missing
d2t06 (0:57 - 1:44) - missing
d2t06 (1:52 - 1:53) - missing
d2t06 (8:28 - 8:44) - missing
d3t01 (0:36 - 0:50) - missing
d3t05 (2:38 - 2:45) - patched in alt. AUD from the one on the SBD source

Note that there is a lot of music missing from the SBD at the end of the show,
and the AUD source has some holes as well, fortunately not in the same places
as the SBD, thus full coverage is achieved.

Thanks to Paul Hogan for recording the AUD and to Paul Bottiglio for converting it.
Also, many thanks for those of you on bt.etree that wanted this show to be
matrixed, it was well worth the effort for me, and I'm sure it will be
worth the wait for you.

Enjoy!!!
