This is the 2nd Mule show that I ever attended/taped, and I'm ashamed to admit that I mainly went to see the opener that night, the Chris Duarte Group. MY priorities that night ran in this order...
1.Party
2.Tape the CDG.
3.Party some more
4.Tape Mule
Although, I had recorded Gov't Mule in Fort Wayne in 1995, and really liked it, I hadn't really "got it" until after this gig. They had clearly taken it to the next level since that first gig.
At this point in my taping career, I was very into making onstage recordings of the CDG where I achieved a "over the top" Guitar volume, by placing my mic near the monitors on the left side of the stage. After Chris played that night, I left my mic on the stage in the same spot for Mule. Years later, when mastering this show to cd, I regret not getting more "Woody" on my recording, but it is what it is. But if you love the sound of Warren's guitar, straight from the amps instead of the PA, you will really dig this. Woody is still audible, but just quite low in the mix. This is exactly what it sounded like to stand right in the front row, in front of Warren, in late 1997. A different perspective, with sonic Guitar tone.
Because of the passage in time, and the regret of not being able to hear Woody better, if somebody with superior skills wants to re-do this show using a computer program, be my guest. All I ask is that you wait until the original has run it's course for a week before you upload the new version.
This recording sounds nice and clean, but could use much more balance. Please do not complain about the way I recorded this. It was what I was going for at the time, a phase I went through. Also, Thorzine is incomplete after Matt's solo. This was the problem of partying while taping on cassette. Like I said, my priorities were different then. This should be considered a 2nd source, not a replacement for any other.
I think many folks will enjoy this show!
