During my years of tape trading, I came across 2 versions of the soundboard tape of this show.
I've arbitrarily called them Version A and Version B for this project.
Version A is the more common one, judging by its inclusion on the ABB setlist database. It is also the
superior version in terms of sound quality, although it is less complete than Version B. My copy of this tape
does not include Whipping Post, which is listed in the database, but the tape did include a filler version of
Whipping Post that I recognized from the 1971-01-31 tape. I suppose it is possible that the people who
created the listing in the database also had that filler and were fooled by it.
Version B is complete (as far as I can tell), but is of poor sound quality, with very high levels and
bass saturation.
As you can see, the setlists are significantly different in order, and Version B includes 2 songs (Whipping
Post and Revival) not included on Version A. Both versions, in fact are out of order, although Version A has
the songs in chunks of correct order, while Version B starts off in the right order, but after 4 songs
everything gets jumbled. Based on what we know about the setlists in early 1971, I think a correct setlist
would look something like this:
Statesboro Blues
Trouble No More
Don't Keep Me Wonderin'
In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed
Midnight Rider
Hot 'Lanta
Dreams
You Don't Love Me
Whipping Post
Revival
I can definitely say the first 4 songs are correct, and I'm reasonably certain about Midnight Rider,
although it could be misplaced. Hot 'Lanta, Dreams, and You Don't Love Me would all be in that order based on
the flow of the songs on Version A. The order of Whipping Post and Revival is possibly incorrect, although the
"goodnight" talk at the end of Revival seems more like the end of the encore, while the mumbled "goodnight"
at the end of Whipping Post sounds less final. Interestingly, I'm unaware of any other Revival
encores/show closers from these months.
Both tapes are at incorrect speeds, but I didn't want to attempt speed/pitch correction at this time.
Version A is only slightly fast, but Version B is almost a half step fast, seemingly speeding up as the
tape progresses.
To verify that the 2 tapes were, in fact, the same show, I tested each track and identified several instances
of identical guitar lines or band chatter immediately before or after a song.
