Welcome to the sixth edition of JEMS' Nothing to Lose series revisiting Bruce's remarkable 1977 tour. For the full history of our obsession with this era and the back story on these "Official Audience Tapes," please refer to the notes in Vol. One found here: http://jungleland.dnsalias.com/torrents-details.php?id=38539 Installment No. 6 rewinds to the first week of the tour and a 15-song set at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens, the legendary hockey arena, set up in its Concert Bowl configuration which cut the arena to half its normal size. It is the first of three JEMS master recordings done on the '77 tour, and, dare I say, we think you're going to like this one quite a bit. Toronto '77 has circulated among collectors since not long after J taped it that frosty February. A master-to-DAT transfer was done in the early days of the format, copies of which almost certainly provided the source for releases like Soul Crusaders (E Street) and No Trouble In Receiver (EV2). It's long been one of the better audience recordings of the tour, but it has never sounded as good as it could. This marks the first direct digital transfer of the master, and every step along the chain, from the azimuth-adjusted playback to high-resolution capture to final mastering, is superior to what was done to DAT 25 (how can it be?) years ago. Additionally, it lacks some of the minor edits found in the extant versions. It's also one of those shows that I personally played dozens and dozens of times throughout the years; the recording which definitively made be believe the following: "Night" is one of Bruce's greatest show openers; "It's My Life" had reached its zenith; "Something in the Night" is an under-appreciated classic; "Growin' Up" can support more than one tall tale; "Action in the Streets" should have been resurrected when the horns came back in 1988 and 2012; the "You lied!!!" moment in "Backstreets" may never be rivaled; "Raise Your Hand" should have been played every night of the tour; and, finally, that J was (and remains) a highly skilled taper. Here’s what J himself had to say about the show: “Back in 1977, a taper had to rely on a network of friends and collectors across the country to get early warning of shows and ticket sales. In the case of Toronto, we had a great friend up north in fellow taper The Lewk. He took care of us on our many road trips into Ontario, and he exceeded expectations with this Bruce show, getting me and my friends great seats at Maple Leaf Gardens, curtained off lengthwise to form the 'Concert Bowl.’ The curtain improved the notoriously bad sound there, and The Lewk got me a seat just off the center aisle, ten rows back from the stage. This was the first of three Bruce shows I saw and recorded on this tour, using my Sony TC-153SD and Teac M-100 mic, which I mounted high in a headband. We expected new material on this tour as we presumed that Bruce was probably a month or so away from putting out a new album. After all, it had been a year and half since Born To Run was released. The Toronto show was unique, in that the fire marshall insisted there be an intermission, making it the first time Bruce had split the set, a feature that would later become a staple of the show structure. We got great versions of 'Rendezvous', 'Something In The Night' and 'Action In The Streets,' but the real highlight this night (and at all 1977 shows) was the incredible version of ‘Backstreets.’ It was never better than it was in 1977!” Like this entire series, the Toronto performance is a pleasure to listen to and the sound quality (to my ears) approaches the best tapes of the tour, including those of our pal Steve Hopkins and whoever did the official audience tapes. It offers an airy high end, punchy low end and vivid clarity to pick out each member of the band making magic. Samples provided. I know a lot of you have this recording already and, make no mistake, Toronto has always sounded good, but I think this version is definitive. Then again, I'm biased. We're making it available in both standard and high-resolution 24/96 editions. Massive credit goes to J for his outstanding original recording and for pulling out the masters one last time to capture them at 24/96 and giving me so much to work with. Thanks yet again to M, for providing his '77 source tapes; to the folks on the Stone Pony message board whose thread sparked this series; and to mjk5510 who continues to provide invaluable assistance as JEMS' packaging and distribution supervisor. Our next stop in the '77 series is two nights hence in Detroit and one of the greatest show openers of all time. BK for JEMS

Welcome to the seventh edition of JEMS' Nothing to Lose series revisiting Bruce's remarkable 1977 tour. For the full history of our obsession with this era and the back story on the "Official Audience Tapes" that made up the first five volumes of the series, please refer to the notes in Vol. One found here: http://jungleland.dnsalias.com/torrents-details.php?id=38539 Installment No. 7 transports us again to the first week of the tour and a 14-song set at Detroit’s Masonic Temple Theatre. It is the second of three Springsteen master recordings JEMS made in ‘77, and, dare I say, we think you're going to like this one as much as you liked the first one, Toronto, recorded two days before. Like Toronto, Detroit '77 has circulated among collectors since not long after J taped it 38 years ago. A master-to-DAT transfer was also made in the early days of the digital format, copies of which almost certainly provided the source for releases like Masonic Temple (Joker) and The Devil In Detroit. It's long been one of the better audience recordings of the tour, but it has never sounded as good as it could. This marks the first direct digital transfer of the master tapes, and every step along the chain, from the azimuth-adjusted playback to high-resolution capture to final mastering, is superior to what was done to DAT 25 years ago. This particular night holds an interesting place in Springsteen history because it came at a particular low moment in his career. Brucebase explains it succinctly: “Bruce would later comment that this night was the first time in his life that he did not want to get up on stage. At this point the lawsuit preventing him from recording had been dragging on for several months.” Seven shows into his third tour since the release of his last album (Born to Run), it make sense that Bruce might have lost faith in a light at the end of the tunnel. But you’d never know his mood by listening to the show itself, which is every bit the equal of Toronto. That being said, there is a tone set by the absolutely striking version of “Something in the Night” which opens the show, and this is the last time on the tour he would start with it (“Night” would serve as the opener going forward). Knowing what we know in hindsight, the stark, emotional reading of “Something” feels like some form of catharsis and, for me, it is one of the greatest show openers in Springsteen history. I absolutely adore this version and the audacity of opening with a song that starts with such a slow build. If I only I had been there to witness it. Happily, J was, and once again his mono capture is quite excellent, consistent and free from audience interruption. Samples provided. There is one set variation from Toronto with “Growin’ Up” coming out and the “Detroit Medley” coming into the encore for the first and only time in 1977. Brucebase lists “Raise Your Hand” as the last song of the show, a detail included in a Michigan Daily review. That J wouldn’t record the final encore, on a side of a tape that still had nearly 20 mins of recording time left on it, in his hometown no less, strikes me as extremely unlikely, so despite that review, I’d suggest this recording is the complete performance. I know a lot of you have Detroit ‘77 already and, make no mistake, it has always sounded good, but I think this version is definitive. Then again, I'm biased. We're making it available in both standard and high-resolution 24/96 editions. J has been on my mind a lot this week as he faces a new setback in his battle against cancer. He went through successful surgery about a week ago and will begin new treatment soon. If you have positive thoughts, prayers and wishes, it couldn’t hurt to send them his way. J is single-handedly responsible for hundreds and hundreds of audience recordings the collecting community has enjoyed for decades. We all owe him our thanks. Massive credit goes to J for his outstanding original recording and for pulling out the masters one last time to capture them at 24/96 and giving me so much to work with. Thanks yet again to M, for providing his '77 source tapes; to the folks on the Stone Pony message board whose thread sparked this series; and to mjk5510 who continues to provide invaluable assistance as JEMS' packaging and distribution supervisor par excellance. Our final stop in the '77 series will mark the debut of one of Springsteen’s greatest rock songs. BK for JEMS

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band featuring the Miami Horns Milwaukee Auditorium Milwaukee, WI Welcome back to the third round of JEMS' Nothing to Lose series revisiting Bruce's remarkable 1977 tour. For the full history of our obsession with this era and the back story on these "Official Audience Tapes," please refer to the notes in Vol. One found here: http://jungleland.dnsalias.com/torrents-details.php?id=38539 Installment No. 3 takes Springsteen back to Milwaukee for the first time since the infamous bomb scare show in October 1975. In his intro to "Thunder Road," Bruce invokes his memorable, oft-repeated line from that night, "Are you loose?" and recounts that, because of the scare, "I went home and came back," with "home" seemingly a euphemism for "to the bar." The set list here is identical to our last volume, St. Louis, February 28, 1977, but we don't think you'll mind. The highlights are much the same, with strong and long versions of "Mona > She's the One" and "Backstreets." Like St. Louis, the latter and "Tenth Avenue Freeze-out" are taken at a slower pace. The show ends with particularly committed version of "Quarter to Three." Of the so-called "official audience tapes," Milwaukee is the most widely known, thanks to a mid-90s bootleg CD Action in the Streets. More commonly circulated these days is a version called The Return to Bombscare Arena, which is remastered from the aforementioned bootleg. We think you'll find this new transfer a significant improvement, sounding more natural, without any exaggerated high end or noisy artifacts. Samples provided. That isn't to say it is perfect. Like St. Louis, there are moments here when things seem to go out of balance ("Rosalita"), but there are many more where the mix locks in appealingly ("Rendezvous"). Taken as whole, I find this a very satisfying listen and one of the better quality tapes from the tour when the recording is at its best. Special thanks to: M and J from JEMS for pulling out our many versions of these DATs and helping make new transfers; the folks on Stone Pony whose thread sparked this series; and to mjk5510 who continues to support our efforts and bring his critical ears to bear to help make the finished product just a little bit better. Welcome back to the second round of JEMS' Nothing to Lose series revisiting Bruce's remarkable 1977 tour. For the full history of our obsession with this tour and the back story on these "Official Audience Tapes," please refer to the notes in Vol. One found here: http://jungleland.dnsalias.com/torrents-details.php?id=38539 Our second installment is a cracking set from St Louis that despite featuring but 13 songs, still clocks in at close to two hours, thanks in part to long/epic versions of "It's My Life," "Mona > She's the One," "Rosalita" and a particularly gripping "Backstreets," played here at a much slower pace than you're used to (as is "Tenth Avenue"), perhaps because it is so heavy with emotion. Despite Bruce's mumbled apology "sorry we're late," the show gets off to a lively start with "Night" and quite brilliant reading of "Rendezvous." The tour's unique original song, "Action in the Streets" (never played again with the E Street Band after this tour) is a highlight every single night and the same can be said for all the songs that feature the Miami Horns. You will likely find the sound quality here to be a step up from Richfield/Vol. One. It is closer and fuller, with Garry W. Tallent well represented in the mix. If there's any complaint about the sound quality its that Bruce's vocals at some of the loudest peaks of the show ("Thunder Road," "She's the One" and "Born to Run") seems to be breaking up or distorting a bit in the PA, but you might not have noticed that if I hadn't pointed it out. Samples provided. Thanks to M and J from JEMS for pulling out our many versions of these DATs and helping make new transfers, to the folks on Stone Pony whose thread sparked this series, and to mjk5510 who takes the handoff again and runs up the middle for the end zone. Welcome to the ninth edition of JEMS' Nothing to Lose series revisiting Bruce's remarkable 1977 tour. For the full history of our obsession with this era and the back story on the "Official Audience Tapes" that made up the first five volumes of the series, please refer to the notes in Vol. One found here: http://jungleland.dnsalias.com/torrents-details.php?id=38539 Installment No. 9 teleports us back to the home stretch of the tour and a 14-song set at the Sports Arena in Toledo. It is the third and final Springsteen master recording JEMS made in 1977, and, dare I say, we think you're going to enjoy this as much as you liked the first two, Toronto and Detroit. In terms of the history of this recording and its dissemination, Toledo is different from Detroit and Toronto in that we do not believe the master cassettes were ever transferred to and circulated from DAT or any other digital medium, so this is not only the first torrent off the master, it is the first digital version from the master, period. Amusingly, until about two years ago, even I didn’t know JEMS had recorded Toledo, which seems crazy, but until I pulled it out of a drawer at JEMS North and asked, I honestly thought it was someone else’s recording. Such is the wonder of J. Even now I’m still learning what he taped. If for no other reason, Toledo ‘77 earns a place in Springsteen history for the debut of what for me is one of his greatest rockers, “Don’t Look Back.” Until its release on Tracks in 1999, “Don’t Look Back” was like a secret handshake for super fans, bonding over a song most people had never heard. Over the course of the next two weeks of the tour, between Toledo and night four in Boston, the song’s lyrics would evolve materially; here it is in its most embryonic form, including the line that provides our title but didn’t make the final version. “Don’t Look Back” isn’t the only highlight of course: we get another heart-wrenching “Something in the Night” with Steve Paraczky’s gorgeous trumpet intro; the welcome return of “Growin’ Up” with the “Mr. Spaceman” story; a long, positively hopping “Quarter To Three” featuring the Miami Horns; and yet another epic “Backstreets.” The recording is in glorious mono and holds its own against the high bar of Detroit and Toronto. In fact, Toledo boasts remarkable separation of music and audience and at times one of the most up front Springsteen vocals I’ve heard on an audience tape. It’s never been lauded as one of the better tapes of the tour but it likely will be now. Samples provided. Massive credit goes to J for his outstanding original recording and for pulling out the masters one last time to capture them at 24/96 and giving me so much to work with. Thanks yet again to M, for providing his '77 source tapes; to the folks on the Stone Pony message board whose thread sparked this series; and to mjk5510 who continues to provide invaluable assistance as JEMS' finishing and distribution superstar. Toledo was scheduled to be the last release in our 1977 Tour Revisited series, but we’ve identified one other extant recording we believe we can upgrade. That will come early in the new year. Until then, enjoy “Don’t Look Back” and the rest of the wonderful Toledo ‘77 show. BK for JEMS

Welcome back to the fourth chapter of JEMS' Nothing to Lose series revisiting Bruce's remarkable 1977 tour. For the full history of our obsession with this era and the back story on these "Official Audience Tapes," please refer to the notes in Vol. One found here: http://jungleland.dnsalias.com/torrents-details.php?id=38539 Installment No. 4 brings Springsteen to Towson, MD, 14 miles outside of Baltimore on the campus of Towson State University. In terms of the '77 tour, this stop is somewhere on the fourth turn, heading for the home stretch, with just 12 days left to go before the tour memorably wraps up in Boston on March 25. There's one very significant change to the set list this night, the introduction of one of Springsteen's greatest rockers, "Don't Look Back," which would not be released for another 22 years. The song debuted three nights earlier in Toldeo, OH, and it is still in embryonic form, with lyrics evolving show to show. At this point in the song's evolution, Springsteen has the first verse and a half basically set, before we hear the couplet "riding out by the dynamo / pushing daddy's car as fast as it would go" in the place of the eventual and more memorable "white lights burning, pocket's full of cash / angel writes her name in lipstick on my dash," most of which is found here in the third verse. The bridge is also different, centered around the lines "someday I want to hold you / someday I want to make you mine." It's a thrill to hear this wonderful song take shape. Of the so-called "official audience tapes," Towson is probably the least known, as it has never been bootlegged. We think you'll find this new transfer an improvement over circulating copies. Like all these '77 official audies, the sound does vary slightly throughout the show, sometimes sounding more locked in than others, but, overall, the Towson tape is a fine listen. Samples provided. Special thanks yet again to: M and J from JEMS for pulling out our many versions of these DATs and helping make new transfers; the folks on the Stone Pony message board whose thread sparked this series; and to mjk5510 who continues to stand at the ready in support of our efforts and add his magic to the finished product. This 13 song show is an all out thrill ride! The setlist is sweet including “Don’t Look Back”, “Something In The Night” and “Action In The Streets.” This also includes the long version of Backstreets with the dramatic story interlude with Bruce wishing God would send angels to blow the town away. Something in the Night is beautiful! The Miami Horns make an appearance during “Tenth Ave” and the rarely performed “Action In The Streets.” There are a couple of small glitches with a few seconds of the beginning of “Tenth” missing and a couple of spots in “Spirit.” But, overall this is a nice recording worth having. Welcome to the return of JEMS’ Nothing To Lose series revisiting Bruce's remarkable 1977 tour. For the full history of our obsession with this era and the back story on the "Official Audience Tapes" that make up several volumes of the series, please refer to the notes in Vol. One found here: http://jungleland.dnsalias.com/torrents-details.php?id=38539 Vol. 11 is an unexpected discovery: another official audience recording, which we believe to be previously uncirculated. It captures the first 80+ minutes of the March 15, 1977 Binghamton, NY show which we released from an average audience tape source on Vol. Eight of the series (and which fills out three missing tracks here). JEMS obtained its copies of the so-called official audience recordings from two different sources, one in the early ‘90s and a second a few years later. In both instances, we borrowed our source’s cassettes and transferred them to DAT. Each batch included the familiar Richfield, OH, St. Louis and Towson, MD shows, along with other ‘77 recordings including New Haven and Binghamton. Because those first four proved to be identical recordings from both sources, it seems we never compared EVERY tape we transferred from Source Two and presumed all of them to be the same as what we obtained from Source One. Fast-forward a few decades to last week, when I had a chance to go through a hard drive containing DAT transfers J made over the last few years in an effort preserve those recordings while we still can (turns out DAT is a not a stable medium compared to analog tape and some of our earliest DATs are beginning to become unplayable without noise and errors). One of those transfers was Binghamton from Source Two and when, on a lark, I auditioned it, I realized that it was in fact another official audience recording, and as clear, close and balanced as the best recordings in our series. The new Binghamton is a substantial upgrade to the circulating audience recording found on Vol. Eight, and while not complete (the new recording ends at Jungleland, the final three songs of the show on this torrent come from the previous source), what is there sounds brilliant. It is especially satisfying to hear yet another early version of “Don’t Look Back” in such clarity while the lyrics are still evolving with each performance. All the key songs from the tour, including “it’s My Life,” “Action in the Streets” and “Backstreets,” sound lovely here. Samples provided. This post is is tinged with deep sadness and loss. When I initially drafted my notes, I offered “thanks to J for transferring these now-finicky DATs" and preserving this otherwise lost slice of '77 audio bliss. As some of you know who are regular followers of JEMS releases, J’s battle with cancer continues and the road is getting much much tougher.” Sadly, on Saturday night, October 29, 2016, we lost Jared at the far-too-young age of 60, ending a six-year battle with cancer. He faded out peacefully that night, in his home, surrounded by family and friends. Jared is a legend in this hobby and he was as good a friend to me and others as he was a taper and collector. For more than 40 years, Jared recorded and preserved literally thousands of live recordings so that we could enjoy them today. His tapes are his legacy. He will be missed by those lucky enough to know him personally and by untold thousands who will listen to the shows he recorded and/or preserved in the years to come. Special thanks to the folks on the Stone Pony message board whose thread sparked this series and to mjk5510 who continues to excel as JEMS' post-production partner. We can’t do it without him. Welcome to the fifth chapter of JEMS' Nothing to Lose series revisiting Bruce's remarkable 1977 tour. For the full history of our obsession with this era and the back story on these "Official Audience Tapes," please refer to the notes in Vol. One found here: http://jungleland.dnsalias.com/torrents-details.php?id=38539 Installment No. 5 brings Springsteen to New Haven, Connecticut, as the tour settles into its final shows in the northeast, six of which are still to follow. For me, this is a period of near perfection in terms of the caliber of the performances and the sense of urgency that's palpable in the recordings. There may be only 13 songs in the set, but Bruce and the band are making every one of them count. My typical listening to material from '77 has tended to focus on the unique songs, like "Action in the Streets" and "It's My Life." But in preparing this show, I was struck by just how good the "standard" songs are. Bruce sings "Spirit in the Night" and "Thunder Road" with every bit as much conviction as he does "Don't Look Back," and we all know how special "Backstreets" is every night in '77. Fresh ears also picked out a lot of distinctive guitar work from Steve and Bruce that I felt I had never noticed before. "We tore it apart and put it together again" indeed. New Haven is the final "official audience" source in the JEMS Archive. I consider it the best recording of the five, sounding just a bit closer, sharper and with better instrument separation than the previous four. It came to us from a different source than the first four (an insider, not a collector), so it may also be a generation to the good comparitively. But it is incomplete, joined in progress during "Spirit." Happily, our pal CB taped the show as well and loaned us his master cassettes. The CB source was previously released by Fanatic; we did a fresh transfer for this release. CB told me he taped from the back of the arena and it sounds like it, but the recording is still clear and fills in what's missing from the better source to give us the complete New Haven show. Samples provided. Special thanks yet again to: M and J from JEMS for pulling out our many versions of these DATs and helping make new transfers; to CB, one of "The Original Two" who got the whole Springsteen taping hobby started; the folks on the Stone Pony message board whose thread sparked this series; and to mjk5510 who takes our bits and bobs and gets them all pretty for you. When the '77 series returns, we'll revisit Toronto, Detroit and Toledo, all from fresh master transfers. Until then, enjoy New Haven, and better still, add your thoughts about the show and the recording in the comments. BK for JEMS
