Can I Put You On
Elton John with Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson
November 1970 (possibly Nov. 12, 1970)
On November 12, 1970, Elton John begins a 4 night stand opening for The Kinks. The bill also includes jazz-rock band Ballin' Jack and Juicy Lucy.
Based on known setlists (above) and the fact that Wolfgang?s Vault is now broadcasting a ?Honky Tonk Women? from Nov. 12, I?m willing to bet that the 12th is the correct date for this show. (If anyone has a copy to compare this version to, please be my guest.)
Elton had only made his US debut a couple of months earlier on Aug. 25th at the Troubadour where he played 6 nights in a row before returning to the UK (presumably) to record Tumbleweed Connection which was released on Oct. 30. Next the band performed 5 East Coast concerts in Boston, Philly and Baltimore before heading out west for 1 show in San Bernadino, CA. and the 4 Fillmore shows. 2 days after the last Fillmore show, Elton and the band were in NYC at A&R Studios for the in-studio radio concert which produced the classic live album ?11-17-70" (or as it was known everywhere else, ?17-11-70"!).
This performance, only 5 days earlier, is very similar in feel and performance to that album.

Burn Down The Mission Medley including Get Back
This is from another uncirculated reel master tape, featuring an entire night at the Swing. The opening act was Sweathog (or Frosty??), then Elton John. The main headliner was Leon Russell.
I have had some trouble in pinning down the exact date. It's probably the 15th

T1-T8 demos likely recorded at Trident Studios in Soho, March 1970; T8-T14 likely recorded at Sound Techniques, Chelsea June 1970 (demo recordings of songs from Witchseason Music Publishers, written by some of England's top folk songwriters, such as Nick Drake, Ed Carter, Mike Heron, Beverly Martin and John Martyn. These recordings would be circulated amongst other artists and record label A&R men in hopes that they would be recorded. Vocals by Elton John and Linda Peters, later to become Linda Thompson).
