Paul Lewis is an English classical music pianist, described as one of the most popular artist of his generation. Paul Lewis was born to a Liverpool family, with father working at Liverpool docks and mother being a local council worker, and no musicians ever in the family. Among music teachers were Ryszard Bakst (at Chethams School of Music), Joan Havill (at the Guildhall) and Alfred Brendel. Hist first international achievement was the second prize at the 1994 World Piano Competition in London. In 2000 he became a Professor of Piano at the Royal Academy of Music. Paul Lewis is now well established as one of the most sought after artists of his generation, appearing regularly in recital, chamber music, and as a concerto soloist at the world's major musical venues and festivals. His highly acclaimed and award winning Schubert Piano Sonata Series has led to the planning of complete cycles of the Beethoven Piano Sonatas at venues throughout the UK, Europe and in North America over the next 2 seasons, while recording all the sonatas for Harmonia Mundi. He has performed at all of the UK's major concert venues and festivals and has a particularly strong relationship with London's Wigmore Hall. His career has also taken him all over Europe, Australia and the US. In recent seasons he has appeared at the Salzburg Festival, Edinburgh International Festival, the Schubertiade Festival in Schwarzenberg, the La Roque d'Antheron Festival in France, and both the Risor and Vancouver Chamber Music Festivals and at the BBC Proms, appearing at the televised Last Night in 2005. Paul Lewis has played with the London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, The Hallé, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Wiener Kammerphilharmonie, Cologne Chamber Orchestra and Seattle Symphony Orchestra, under such conductors as Mark Elder, Marin Alsop, Ivor Bolton, Richard Hickox, Emmanuel Krivine, Alexander Polianichko, Joseph Swensen, Vassily Sinaisky and Gerard Schwarz. His discography for Harmonia Mundi includes 2 award winning Schubert CDs, a Liszt album including the B minor Sonata, and the first CD of his complete Beethoven series for Harmonia Mundi.
