Dion Buhagiar. It is the resident choir at St. John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta and the Mdina Cathedral. Its repertoire is vast and includes manly sacred polyphony. Apart from its permanent role during liturgical celebrations at the cathedrals, the choir puts up various concerts throughout the year. The choir sees its official debut in 1983 with the performance of the Paukenmesse by Joseph Haydn, although it had already been in the artistic scene in Malta for a few years taking part in various operas in the Manoel Theatre. Since then the choir has given innumerable performances of the highest standard both in Malta and abroad including Brno (Czech Republic), North Cyprus and Palermo (Italy). As part of its silver jubilee activities, the Collegium Musicum Choir vent on tour around Italy, singing in various churches and basilicas including St. Peter’s at the Vatican. Last year the Collegium Musicum Choir had the honour of singing in Westminster Cathedral in London during the Malta Day celebrations. THE UNIVERSITY VOCAL ENSEMBLE The University Vocal Ensemble is made up of all the students specialising in music studies at the University of Malta within the Mediterranean Institute; it is also open to students from other departments who are accepted after they undergo an audition, as well as the academic staff especially those who have a good ear and vocal quality. The University Vocal Ensemble takes part in all the official functions of the university, especially the annual graduation masses at St. John’s Co-Cathedral and the postgraduate degree conferment at the Old University in Valletta.
