Disc One 1. On Afro Blue 00:54 interview with the Band by Mike Price, Joel Davies and Brian Fox, 10/23/99. This will definitely let you know how the band approaches this tune. 2. 7_30_97 04:38 -- First version, acoustic 3. 3_15_98 28:38 -- epic version with Derek, Yonrico, and Bill McKay 4. 7_31_99 14:53 -- sax, keys, and percussion from Galactic 5. 4_11_00 24:48 -- last version with Woody. :-( This is a fairly rare recording, due to a lot of technical problems at that show, as Woody' bass was killing the PA system. I reduced the Bass, but Woody still dominates this one. Oh yes, John Scofield and Derek guest on this, and take it in some nice new directions, along with a "Footprints" tease. Disc Two 1. 6_28_99 10:52 Sax, keys and percussion from Galactic. Although relatively short, this is one of the most flawless versions I've ever heard. 2. 5_23_98 26:06 -- Acoustic with Tim Reynolds and a "The Eleven" jam. Dazzling. 3. 3_19_99 31:30 -- One of the other classic versions with Derek, Yonrico, and Bill McKay. Disc 3 1. 11_12_97 06:11 --early electric trio version. 2. 10_31_99 24:57 -- With Deep Bananna Blackout. Not only is this a classic with the addition of horns, but Fuzzy's guitar solo is one of the best AB solos I've ever heard. 3. 10_30_99 13:37 One of the longest trio-only acoustic versions. 4. 3_27_99 25:29 -- Another of the Dererk, Yonrico, Bill versions, this one had some miscues that "unfortunately" forced Allen into a long, meaty bass solo. Wow. Disc 4 1. 9_24_98 17:25 -- with Kevin Hansen from Huffamoose 2. 4_2_98 08:32 -- Acoustic with Brian Stoltz, guitar, and James Rivers, sax 3. 5_8_99 21:02---- fiddle, keys, and percussion from String Cheese Incident. Great Version. 4. 1_29_99 24:53--- With Eddie Harsh, keys, and Audley Freed. I think this is the most underrated version they've ever done. Eddie's keyboards are incredible, and this one really swirls. Disc 5 1. 2_30_97 16:58 -- the first great jamming version, with Dr Dan on Keys and a nice Les Brers tease 2. 2_27_98 10:45 -- Chuck Leavell on organ -- a taste of things to come? 3. 9_28_98 27:57 4. 9_28_98(ThirdStone) 16:29 The 45 minute jam with Oteil on 2nd bass that may be, for my money, the best Mule jam ever. Disc 6 1. 3_5_98 13:28 -- With Bernie Worrell on keys 2. 3_26_98_03 31:19 -- another insanely long acoustic version with Tim Reynolds. 3. 7_24_98 ?.23:16 -- HORDE Workshop. This may have had more players on it than the LWALHFOF version. John Popper and Drew Zing for starters. Disc 7 1. 4_3_9803 19:11 -- Long Acoustic version with Brian Stoltz 2. 9_22_99 ?..21:53--- "Sco Mule". Warren's solo is short, the end doesn' cohere well, but Jimmy Herring whips out one of the most incredible solos, and I felt sorry for Scofield trying to follow him. 3. Coltrane Quartet , Copenhagen, 1963 08:53 This is a version from the John Coltrane Quartet, in Copenhagen that I put on to give you a feel for how Trane would play it in 63. Afro Blue was never the long jam tune for Trane as it was for the Mule. (My Favorite Things, Mr. PC and Impressions were the ones Trane played the longest), although there is a longer version on Live At Seattle, this is very wild stuff, and I'd avoid it unless you are really willing to take a risk. There are some varied sound problems on this track, but come on, its 40 years old! Disc 8 1. Afro Blue 9/23/99 (the other ScoMule show) 2. Afro Blue 5/10/01 (first New School version) 3. Low Spark 5/10/01 (killer) 4. Madman Across the Water (5/10/01 or 5/11/01)
