although Fenway Park has been around since 1912, making it one of the oldest
venues in Boston and one of the oldest parks used for major league baseball in
the U.S. there hasn't been a long list of concerts there. Phish, (5/31/09)
the Dave Matthews Band, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Diamond and Jimmy Buffett have
played shows there, along with both U-2 and the Stones. not too many others.
this was the second of 2 nights, (the 1st was Aug. 21st, apparently) and
one of the 1st few shows of the 2005 U.S. tour. the setlist for Aug. 21 only had 1
different song from this show, Heartbreaker instead of Bitch. according to the 1st
reference listed in dime's discography listing for Rolling Stones, the band also
played 2 rehearsal dates at Fenway Park, on August 18 and 19 (not rehearsal concerts,
but rehearsals of the concert without alot of people around to get the sound right).
Before that they played a show in Toronto, Ontario, on Aug 10, which was recorded and
released in their "Biggest Bang" 4 Cd boxset. This one was not released as of this posting.
Fenway Park is, other than Gillette Stadium which is about 30 miles southwest of Boston,
the biggest bang venue available for the Stones to play in Boston area. Still no problem
selling out two shows. Especially since at the time, the Red Sox 1st "world series" champ.
in 86 years was still a very fresh memory. I guess Stones fans in Boston should thank the
Red Sox for making these 2 shows possible in this big a venue, in the city of Boston.
even the mayor Tom Menino said it was "good for the city to have the greatest rock and
roll band in the world play at Fenway Park". their 1975 mayor, Kevin White never said anything
like that about having Led Zeppelin play a concert in his city in 1975, even at the usual
local big concert venue, the Boston Garden. (for which Zep fans suffered dearly).
It wasn't until they won that 2004 championship, that the Stones played there, and it
holds about twice the crowd that Boston Garden holds. (or the new TD Banknorth Garden)
I've never seen a concert in Fenway Park, seen many a Red Sox game there and the acoustics
are weird, even more than usual for a baseball stadium. The green monster is made of steel
beams (I hope!) on the inside, tin on the outside. just like that found in a tuna fish can.
The sound of a ball hit off that left-field wall resembles a rat-tail whacking a metal
garbage can. fortunately that experience is not part of this one. It's not real close up,
but not too much crowd noise in here, for a Stones show, even before a large appreciative
audience.
The CD's I recieved of this show needed re-tracking, which I did so each track
starts either with talk from the band or the song, since there was a lot of nothing
going on between almost every song. there were a couple of gaps removed, apparently
only one brief interruption of the recording between tracks 2 and 3, but no music is
missing. the recording is quite enjoyable and clean (apparently no analog lineage at all)
and everyone in the band can be heard pretty well.
silly thought: I couldn't help wondering what it would sound like if either
Mick Jagger came out for an encore in a tull concert, or Ian Anderson came out
for a Stones encore and did "It's only rock and roll > Too old to rock and roll".
(or in the reverse order) It sounds a little different hearing 60somethings singing songs
they made famous as 20-30 somethings, but neither the stones or tull, are too old to rock
and roll (yet) so may as well enjoy them while we can because they are getting older like
the rest of us. they sound pretty young and lively in this show for a bunch of close to
60somethings.
Do not sell this recording.
share freely and losslessly.
