My personal Notes:

Notes about the concert, and the bands performance:

This is the last show of the U.S 72 tour...and what a way to go out!.

This performance is what some collectors may call a "sister show" to the bands shows in L.A, and Long Beach in 72. It's just as powerful, and their playing is just as impressive, (maybe a little tighter then then the L.A, and Long Beach performances, but still enjoyable).

Everyone in the group is performing well, and seem to be in good spirits, particularly Robert who had previously had a bad experience at a concert held in Phoenix,Arizona, (4-18-70).

Robert had collapsed backstage due to exhaustion, (either because of tour exhaustion or possibly due to the heat).

I personally think that it was a combination of both things that caused him to collapse.

Tour exhaustion is a possibility because the band were touring almost non-stop at the time, and the night before they did this show, the band were in Memphis, Tennessee, and that's quite a trip to make in one night.

Plus, the band had a bad run in with a concert promoter in Memphis that pulled a gun on their manager Peter Grant. which most likely added on to the stress.

And I think heat exhaustion was a contributing factor as well because Robert comments about his incident in Phoenix during the show and says "I just can't get hot with the place...coming from the mountains and things like that".

But luckily Robert isn't suffering from any malaise at this show.

He makes several comments during the concert that he's enjoying himself, saying he feels it "warming up", that he's been "smiling all night", and that he's "Finally coming to grips with the place", (which I think was a reference to Arizona, and that he found his groove there after having a bad experience, but it could've been a reference to America as a whole).

I might be alone in this sort of thinking, but I think that Jimmy should've used some of the audio from this show to use in the official release "How The West Was Won".

Made the release a collection of the last three performances of the 72 tour, there are moments on this recording that shine just as equally to things they performed at L.A, and Long Beach, but that's just my opinion on the issue.

I think this show is usually overshadowed, and overlooked by the L.A and Long Beach 72 performances because of these 2 issues:

1) Theres some "top end" distortion that's found in the channels of the recording, which can sometimes be grating on the ears.

2) The band didn't play as much material as they did at those 2 concerts (they omitted most of the acoustic set, and didn't play as many previews from "Houses Of The Holy" as they did in L.A, and Long Beach).

There are rumours that this recording is actually incomplete, and that the band actually DID play more material that night, but the taper is hoarding the encores.

I can't comment on whether or not this is true, if it is true, I hope that Rob will one day share the rest of the show with the community.

Besides the audience recording, the only other document of this concert is a brief fragment of silent, colour, 8mm film footage.

The footage is a little grainy at times, and mostly focuses on Jimmy,the film footage has been used for bootleg DVD releases like "Assemblage".

After the U.S tour ended, Robert had apparently undergone throat surgery, and his voice would never be the same.
You can definately hear a change to his voice when you listen to recordings from the Japan,72 tour, there's a lot of strain in his voice, and he sometimes has problems hitting high notes that he never used to have problems hitting.

These issues with Robert's voice could be the reason why the band had become less experimental with their playing, and more of a tighter, no nonsense band during the remainder of the 72 tour.

The changes in his voice could've forced the band to change the way they were used to playing, and had to work around his voice.

So this recording is something special because it's the final document of what Robert's voice was like before he had the surgery.

Notes about the sound quality, and why we chose to work on this recording:

This concert is a great sounding recording, very punchy, and has great atmosphere, but as I stated previously, the recording does suffer from some "top end" distortion in the channels, which does hurt the sound quality, and can be grating on the ears.

Depending on which version of this show you've heard (whether a bootleg release, or a direct master transfer) this recording also has some issues with the volume.

Some versions of this show have been unnescessarily over amplified, and some sound a little too low, almost flat.

Besides those issues, there's also some tape hiss on the recording.

The only issue we couldn't fix are the brief tape speed issues that happen near the beginning of "Whole Lotta Love".

I think they might be either techincal issues with the tapers equipment, or were maybe caused by the taper by possibly hitting a wrong button, or fiddling with the equipment.

We tried to attempt to fix them, but all our efforts couldn't fix/improve that section of the recording.

So the goal of this project was to fix some of the issues that plagued the recording (buffer out some of the distortion, yet still keep the punch), bring the volume down to a more reasonable level to make it easier on the ears, and of course, try and breathe some new life into the recording.

What we've done to make this recording:

- We've brought the volume down to a reasonable level that isn't so hurtful on the ears.

- We've tried to reduce some of the distortion in the recording.

- We've tried to balance the instruments.

The title comes from an old John Wayne movie, I don't really remember how we came across the reference, but we thought it was a suitable name for a title, that makes reference to the place where the concert takes place.
