The performance:

It really all comes down to Peter's voice. Peter's voice was a bit hoarse. Still, it does seem that he benefited from the singular
day of rest between Ventura and Santa Ana. Bauhaus and solo numbers sounded very good. There seems to be more strain while performing
"Hurt" and "Raw Power" rather than his own compositions. His range is still in tact although he has performed at a more reserved level
of volume over the past decade. Energy of the show was white hot as he ripped through the rockers... "Low Room", "Velocity Bird"
(a great new track), "Peace To Each", "Memory Go" and crowd favourite "Disappearing". Then, rather unexpectedly, Peter decides
to converse with the audience for a long time. In the past Peter has rarely broken "the fourth wall" while performing. The rare exception
was when his hand cramped while playing "Marlene Dietrich's Favourite Poem" on the 12 string during "Wild Birds" at HOB - LA. This time he
engaged in some schtick with the audience that was received, well, mixed. Some chick in the audience handed him a note which he read aloud
to everyone. She accused him of being non-supportive and "mean" to opening bands. This sucked what little energy was left right out of the
room. Peter was taken aback by her assertions and seemed caught off guard. He tried to defend his position. I personally know that Jewel
got major exposure opening for Peter during "Cascade". Still, the icon has his reputation of being a primadonna. This man was shrieking at
"the poor lighting guy" while Christian Bale was still in Middle School. Needless, to say the ship got righted for Bauhaus numbers
"Silent Hedges" and "Burning From The Inside". These were performed pretty faithfully as a quartet as Jake kept leaving the stage for
Bauhaus numbers and coming back for the solo material. Then more chit-chat ensued. "I'll Fall With Your Knife" was performed in the
correct key, which was a very good sign. Yay! "Subway" was great with Peter (obviously inspired by Numan) noodling with the Virus TI center stage.
The ballads "Hurt" and "MDFP" followed. New track "The Prince And The Old Lady Shade" was a cracker. Then even more chat. Next, Peter strapped
on the guitar to play a very rare "Stigmata Martyr"; a song he seemed to disavow due to it's conflicting message with his current religious
beliefs of Islam. Oh well I guess. It still sounded great! "Uneven and Brittle" was neither and sounded very solid. Next was the very popular
"A Strange Kind Of Love" complete with "Bela Lugosi's Dead" refrain performed in this manner since "Wild Birds". The audience went ape-shit.
I thought OK, it's cool but I've heard it before. "She's In Parties", "Cuts You Up", Iggy's "Raw Power" (nice change from "Fun Time") and the
latest, excellent Bauhaus track "Too Much 21st Century" closed outh the show. A note: "Deep Ocean Vast Sea" seemed to have been nixed from
the set because of time constraints, invariably due to the bitch that killed the vibe with her fucking stupid note. Good one!

The band:

His band of the last five years featuring Mark Gemini-Thwaite from The Mission and Nick Lucero, ex-QOTSA performed very well. This is
perhaps the tightest incarnattion of his band since The Hundred Men (sorry Peter DiStefano and Kevin Haskins). The addition of Jake Peppera? on
Rhythm Guitar and occasional 12-string along with the mostly unmanned Virus TI helped fill out the songs' sound. Material from the new album
sounds like a winner. Oddly enough all five new sonds were performed nearly two years ago during "Secret Cover", so no real surprises there. I
would really like to hear " I Spit Roses" and "See Saw Sway" pop up in future shows.

The recording...

Where do I start? "The Galaxy" has a pretty substandard sound system. I've seen many shows there and am largely unimpressed with the sound
quality of the venue. They seemed to be more concerned with serving dinner than investing in a proper sound system. Every act I have seen come
through here over the past 5 years seems to struggle with the sound. They have a set of ceiling stacks and nothing on the floor. They overdrive
the shit out of them to get sound throughout the multi-level venue. No floor stacks and no outward facing stage monitors. This coupled with the
fact that Peter's vocal effects are very "wet" made the recording sound like I was pulling U2 at Cowboy's Stadium. Perhaps not that bad. EQ is
solid and vocals are clear but due to the massive amounts of reverb I gotta put this in the VG- camp. I don't have any mastering software or
equipment to sharpen the "attack" on the sound and it's a bit outside of my league. Still a very enjoyable show. Chatty moments are tracked
seperately. Enjoy them as a whole or jettison them. To each his own. I didn't screw around with the levels between songs so you may half to turn
it up a few clicks to hear Peter's one liners and pearls of wisdom.
