WILL BERNARD AND OTHERBUG

Will Bernard (guitar, Roland DJ70 keyboard sampler)
Steve Hogan (electric bass)
Mike Auberg (pimped out Fender Rhodes, orchestron)
Jan Jackson (drums)

* - this is most likely another song by the Coup
** - this is a jam based on the groove portion of the Miles epic, this part of the song is known as "It's About that Time".
*** - this version only based loosely on the song's main theme
^ - stage power was cut due to the band passing curfew, leaving Jan to finish up with a drum solo.

This night was billed as "Will Bernard & Motherbug" but was more like "Will Bernard & Friends" or "Otherbug". Motherbug's regular bassist and keyboardist were both sick this night, so Will brought in two young guns -- Hogan and Auberg -- at the last minute.

This lineup had never even rehearsed together once.

However, both Will and Mike Auberg have done some recording with the Bay Area hip hop group THE COUP, hence the multitude of Coup covers. (FYI, check out Will on the Coup's "STEAL THIS ALBUM", where he is billed under the pseudonym "Bernard Williams").

This show also marked the debut of Will's short-lived foray into using a keyboard sampler on stage... he had a small Roland keyboard set up which he would occasionally tweak with samples or weird analog synth noises. It had a scratch pad too, to give a DJ effect. Unfortunately this keyboard only showed up at 3 or 4 subsequent Motherbug shows, last rearing its head in Portland OR on 3/17/01.

A final note: this is the very first show where the "OTHERBUG" nickname came about... Will joked that this lineup should be called Otherbug or Anotherbug. In 2002, Will would wind up doing a few short tours of the East Coast with a lineup he called "Otherbug" (it didn't feature any members playing on this recording however).

In case you're wondering why the sets are so short, this venue always has the band play 3 short sets, and has an early curfew.
