Trading Rules:

Welcome to my modest but enjoyable music list!

I'm a musician based in Sydney Australia, happy to trade worldwide utilizing the same trading principles as most other traders. My special interest is jazz trumpet players, especially any Chuck Mangione shows that are not yet on my list. But I mix it up with some rock artists, as you can see, calling out Midnight Oil and Hunters & Collectors.

Currently I'm searching for recordings from a specific period of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Can you help out, please?

I'm only interested in Recordings of Independent Origin (ROIOs), including soundboard recordings, FM, TV broadcasts and the like. Quality is the key, and nowadays I tend to steer clear of audience recordings unless it is something very special. Please don't contact me about trading anything that has been officially released and is available for commercial / retail sale. I support musicians and their art by purchasing official releases, and do not trade in them.

For speed and convenience my preferred trading method is to share FLAC/DVD data files via Dropbox, but I'm happy enough to trade CD/DVD media via snail-mail. I'm flexible and will work to your preference.

I'm prompt and I always keep my promises, and I expect the very same of my trading partners. I've really enjoyed the goodwill and cooperation that exists within the trading community, and I do my very best to build on it myself.

Please drop me a line if you think we can establish a trade (don't forget to edit the "~AT~" and "DOT" in my e-mail address)!

Cheers,

Gary

Agalli sent me this 1st Gen copy recently and I thought I would share it. I always liked this group a lot as they took traditional tunes and played them in a heavier and more aggressive fashion. As a matter of fact, I caught this same band the year before in Tokyo while there teaching English. Seems like a long time ago ....."

0 CD/FLAC A+ B+ This was recorded with a handheld tape recorder onto two 60 minute Sony normal bias Type I cassettes. It was input digitally via a tape player into the computer using Roxio Media Creator 10 as a wav file. The files were cleaned up using Roxio Sound Edito Audience recording to C-60 cassettes with some partial songs. But while this doesn't sound riveting, the quality of the show easily makes up for it. Chuck and the band really cook here, making this show something special.

0 CD/FLAC A+ A sonic studios dsm6p-->dat-->za2(48/44.1)-->.wav-->.flac An excellent show! It's 1994, The Hat's Back is the latest album, and Chuck has returned from his hiatus with Gerry Niewood and an otherwise new band. Chuck's playing is strong and he ventures high, and maintains throughout the show. He and the whole band sound stronger than the more recent live shows we've been enjoying of late, IMHO.

Tracks 08-13 run together as "Music from the Children of Sanchez". No reed player on this show, Chuck moves between flugel and trumpet a few times. This show reunites the core of the original Feels So Good band, plus a few extra musicians. Grant Geissman plays his original Feels So Good solo note-for-note! There was a tape flip during Track 06 Land of Make Believe @ 3:50. Another quick tape flip between tracks 10 and 11.

Unusually there is no reed player, with the usual lines mostly carried by Modesto Espada on cello. He adds a new dynamic to Chuck's music and is very entertaining. Besides the absence of Chris Vadala the remaining band members are all from Chuck's 1977 Feels So Good band. The audience recording is very good, although the drums can be a little loud in parts.

1 CD-R A A cassette (unk gen) -> wav -> soundforge (delicate NR & normalize) -> Wav -> Flac All the information given here is sketchy and second hand. There are some major contradictions regarding the information that came with this tape most notably the fact that McLaughlin didn't come to America until February 1969. It's McLaughlin and the place is New York so it's probably late APRIL or early MAY 1969 Attached is a scan of a John McLaughlin Melody Maker interview published April 19 - 1969 where he mentions he has learnt more in the past 6 weeks (it would appear this interview was late in March 1969) he also mentions a FUTURE recording session with Corea, Holland, DeJohnette ......... he does not mention Tony Williams Lifetime yet having a recording contract (they recorded 'Emergency' late May 1969) so this session time was probably donated by Miles Davis and took place April/May 1969. Note that Corea with Holland and DeJohnette, but not McLaughlin recorded the album Is in NYC on the dates May 11-13 1969.

1 CD/FLAC A A Original studio tapes > digital Note from Doinker: Let's be clear about what you are getting here. This is no dat/cassette/whatever. These are 10.5 inch two-track reel to reel tapes running at 15ips. There are ten tracks in all spread over three reels. And, bless it's heart - there's no commercial music in here after vetting the commercial long version of this song note by note. There are takes 1-5 of Olinga itself. There are an additional five tracks labeled as "insert". They are listed as takes 9-13. They may or may not constitute a longer running version of the middle of the existing tune, but they too are commercially unavailable. I'm unable to locate a name for these takes other than "insert", so if you do know, please tell me. Now, how did I acquire these gems? Heh heh... Many years ago in Connecticut there were major teardowns of estate homes to make way for highway construction. One of the firms was United House Wrecking in Stamford, Connecticut. A very long time ago they actually cleared out these estate homes and had items for sale. It was sort of a huge junkyard of sorts in those days, not at all like it is now. Way in the back were a whole bunch of reel tapes. Three of them had the letters "DIZ" on them, and one of them said "Olinga". And there you have it. Two dollars each. And, I won't even tell you about the "Archies" masters I saw there :) No "Sugar Sugar" for me. Forward to now. About four years ago I contacted the Gillespie estate attorney about getting these tapes released. He sounded interested. But after three calls over the space of a year, he was unable to get any sort of response from the family. The last conversation with him was over three years ago. Since the entire LP version of "Olinga" may be streamed on YouTube for well over a year already, it's safe to say there's no one at the wheel over there. Your gain.

1 DVD A A Cable > Beta HiFi > Edit Beta HiFi > Playback Sony EDV-9500 > Standalone Panasonic DMR-E50 (XP) > TMPGenc DVD Author 3 Excellent in-depth interview with jazz virtuoso John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie. Unlike so many interviews that showcase his charm and quick wit, this one reveals a more serious side, covering a wide range of topics. His recollections of jazz greats like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk are particularly interesting. If you enjoy jazz, you'll love this interview.

WTTW Studios "Soundstage"

1 DVD A A TV broadcast In this program, hosted by Quincy Jones and Chick Corea, a group of talented musicians celebrates the Downbeat Reader's Poll Awards of 1975. Musicians include George Benson on guitar; Stanley Clarke on bass; Freddie Hubbard on trumpet; Rahsaan Roland Kirk on saxophone; Hubert Laws on flute; Airto Moreira on percussion; Sonny Rollins on tenor saxophone; McCoy Tyner on piano; Bill Watrous on trombone; and Lenny White on drums. The program begins with the all-star group paying tribute to recently departed jazz legend Julian Edwin "Cannonball" Adderley. Jones and Corea introduce Clarke, Tyner, and White, offering background information on their careers before the three musicians jam. Jones and Corea introduce Benson, Laws, and Watrous, who join in the jam session, and Corea joins the group as everyone plays his song, "Spain." Next, Jones introduces and praises the unique musician Roland Kirk, who demonstrates his musical prowess. Corea then introduces Rollins, who is joined by Tyner as they play Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood." Jones introduces a musical number from the group Weather Report, led by keyboard player Joe Zawinul, and Corea introduces Moreira and Hubbard, who play a spirited number. The program concludes with the entire group paying homage to Ellington.

Legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz and Rahsaan Roland Kirk play boldly alongside new stars who emerged in the 80s like Wynton Marsalis and the young jazz disciples of the 21st century such as Joshua Redman and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Not forgetting the Brits including Acker Bilk, John Dankworth, Courtney Pine and John Surman and the late, lamented Andy Hamilton. Archive sources include Jazz 625, the Late Show, Later with Jools Holland and Crackerjack. Blow man blow!

0 CD-R FM>?>CD-R>soundforge+NR+?PIN>FLAC From the source..... The CD-R I received in trade was originally recorded off a somewhat bad FM radio signal so the show was pretty noisy and flat sounding. I used soundforge noise reduction to make it listenable but left some noise so that the high frequencies wouldn't sound squelched. I might have duplicated the less noisy channel (left or right) to make this mono and used equalization but I'm not sure because it was about 10 years ago. This is an excellent show. as it was right around the time Lyle Mays had released his excellent piano trio CD "Fictionary" with Jack DeJohnette and Marc Johnson. Lyles was in top form and played a few songs from his CD and a few duets with Marian.

1 CD-R A+ B+ Aud > 1st gen cassette copy > Adobe Audition > .wav This uncirculated tape surfaced in the form of a dub from the master, though nobody seems to be able to remember exactly where or when it was recorded. The presence of Allen Vizzutti on trumpet puts it in 1977 or '78, but other than that, it's anybody's guess. I checked two books on Woody, and neither one had any useful information concerning specific shows with Sarah Vaughan in this era. Exact personnel for Woody's band would be almost impossible to nail down, though you can get an idea of it from checking the Road Father album (recorded in January '78) or by looking up Chapter 8 of Chronicles of the Herds by Willam D. Clancy. By the way, if you're a brass player who's not a fan of Sarah Vaughan, Vizzutti's performance of Fire Dance is stunning, probably the best rendition of it in circulation. This show is valuable for that tune alone!

0 CD/FLAC A+ RCA Master tapes. July 27-28 = lossless conversion. July 29-30 have a lossy mp4 heritage. Note there are versions of this circulating that have lossy versions of all 4 nights. Officially released tracks removed. On the Coltrane List John Schott wrote on November 21: In late July of 1962, RCA recorded four nights of Sonny Rollins at the Village Gate, I think two shows a night. From this a little bit was used for the release Our Man In Jazz. I recently was able to download from someone’s rare jazz recordings website what would seem to be nearly the complete four nights. This period of Sonny, with Don Cherry and Billie Higgins, has always for me ranked among the greatest of musical pleasures. (I’m sure I’m speaking for many here.) Mostly this group is documented on pirate CD issues of radio broadcasts from Europe and New York. The five or so hours of Village Gate recordings that I am just now beginning to explore make for a very different picture than the Our Man In Jazz release. Many of the pieces, ranging from eight to twenty minutes, are completely free improvisations, and very searching ones, with big open pauses, pointillistic, sparse moments, non-pulsed and non tonal sections, and not at all the jaunty, zany and joyous improv-on-standards one hears on other recordings of this group. It seems farther out than Ornette’s Atlantic recordings, and farther out than what Coltrane was doing at the time. Rollins seems great as always, but different, not so much the charismatic, larger-than-life personality, but more inwardly-focused. I’m fascinated to expand my sense of what this great artist was doing at this period. It’s amazing to me that RCA hasn’t released this material. I can only assume that Sonny doesn’t want it released. If that’s true, then Sonny Rollins, I am so sorry to have enjoyed this so very much. In my defense I’ve bought at least thirty Sonny Rollins records over the years! JS

1 DVD-R A+ A+ Digital TV Broadcast Featuring a specially-shot introduction with Jamie Cullum, Arena presents a lost treasure - Sonny Rollins performing at Ronnie Scott's in 1974. After nearly 40 years unseen, this unique film shows a spellbinding performance from arguably the greatest saxophone player in the world. Having played alongside Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk, Rollins is one of the few surviving jazz greats. This gig captures him after his 1972 comeback when his bands started to sound funkier and to use electric guitar and bass. The band for this 1974 set features Japanese guitarist Yoshiaki Masuo and soprano saxophone player Rufus Harley, who doubles on the bagpipes.
