The tour story:
This story starts back at home in Texas in October. We had to talk John Goode's mother into letting him fly with us to San Francisco for these shows; he was 17 years old. His mom said she trusted me and gave John her permission. Very misplaced trust I will say, but we all came home safely. John survived his first set of GD shows wearing his walkman radio crawling the halls inside the venue listening to the local FM frequency Dan Healy would set up for these local shows. This would also mark Mike Davis' 4th GD show and his first with the Executive Crew, he was still not a taper per se, but his height helped us block. Then the story moves to San Francisco which had no idea of what kind of havoc the Executive Crew could wreak on a city. We stayed at the world infamous Argyle hotel, a dive if ever there was one. For some reason we figured we needed to stay as close as physically possible to the venue, which was located on Market in the heart of the downtown, rundown part of the city. So we had two rooms there and when we left, they probably looked like the shell of a car which caught fire.

The second set began with a shining China > Rider, then a short but sweet Looks Like Rain. They seemingly address the death in the family+ with a soulful He's Gone with an odd, playful spacey transition into Spoonful. Incredibly strong entrance to the Other One out of space, which followed a strong drums segment that I am certain was expressing the pain and sorrow the band was feeling. Bob and Brent were stabbing out discordant notes and effects into the lead up of The Other One and Jerry simply soars! You can almost hear Jerry crying during Wharf Rat, his vocals were that poignant. Bobby was screaming at the top of his lungs during Sunshine Daydream. The GD debut of Day Tripper was extremely anticipated by tour heads who had heard of them soundchecking it more than once since the BCT run in early November.

+ One serious note about this run of shows is that Steve Parrish's wife and child were killed in a car wreck sometime on the 28th. The tenor of the shows can be felt knowing this fact. From dead.net:" During the break we got word Steve Parrish' wife and daughter were killed in an accident on the bridge. It was horrible news. I asked my friend who had full backstage access; what the Dead were going to do. He said they were about to come back for the 2nd set and play their hearts out." And they did just that. Here is a prime example of their playing on that mournful night.
