Aaron Wiedmann I found out about this show only a few days before, but the one album I have was enough to drive five hours. Whiskey Junction's website didn't have the show's start time(or the cover charge, either, which kind of scared me), but what they did have was something saying there would be "free hors d'ouerves" from 4-6. We decided to plan to leave at noon, to get there around four(shocking, no???). I figured we'd get going a little late, and we did, so we got to Whiskey Junction around five. It was kinda hard to find, too, we drove past it twice, but that may have to do with what was being smoked on the way there. The bar was set up pretty cool, I recommend patronizing this establishment if you happen to be in Minneapolis. They had two chafing dishes full of wings, one BBQ, the other hot. The BBQ was marvelous, and the owner encouraged us to take all we wanted. We got pretty hungry on the drive there, so we had PLENTY! Well, the opening act didn't start until 9:00, so we kinda wandered around the surrounding area. My buddy is a huge Dylan freak, so he wanted to check out Dinkytown. I must say that Minneapolis is a beautiful city. We walked across the massive bridge that spans the Mississippi River, checked out the UM campus, and saw lots of cool stuff. I forget the name of the museum, but it was covered with aluminum and was shaped oddly. But enough about the scenery... We got back with plenty of time to see the start of the opening band. Actually struck up a conversation with a cool brother & sister. Talked music with the guy, he had pretty good taste. He told me that Crow was going to do some covers, which kind of worried me. I am not a big fan of cover bands. More on this later... The opening band was OK, played some pretty standard blues covers. I had a great seat, as I could watch Silva pitch against the Angels & the band at the same time. I saw my favorite pitcher(Ben Weber) throw two hitless innings, but still the Twinkies won. I would like them more if they didn't play in such a disgusting stadium. I had to reposition myself(front & center) for the Crow show. I saw Dave Wagner(lead singer of Crow) hanging out in between the two sets, so I went & talked to him. He was a really nice guy, and he signed my album. I always wondered what was up with his last name(on the album the writing credits are for Dave Waggoner, not Wagner), and he told me that people spelled it wrong so often(I can relate) that he just changed it, as kind of a stage name. I asked what kind of setlist he did, and I asked if he would do "White Eyes". He said he just plain forgot about the song, and one of his long-time buddies backed me up, saying "See, Dave?? I'm not the only one who likes that song!" He said the only song he was going to play off the first album was Evil Woman. I was kinda bummed about that, as they are the only songs I know from Crow. This further supported my worries about the "cover songs" dominating the set. As it turned out they only covered two songs in the set(aside from songs they had already interpreted on albums from the 70's), and they were not standard cover fare. I thought they were going to cover Sugarloaf's Green Eyed Lady, as all of the instruments when being tuned up used the parts from that song, but they did not. They did cover a song that Sugarloaf covered themselves on an album in the 70's, Chest Fever. This made me think that perhaps the keyboardist was a former member of Sugarloaf. The drummer, Norm, was not their usual drummer who they played with. I think he is an old member, who has since left the band, but they needed someone to fill in for the current drummer. He was really good, his drum solo was pretty excellent. I got the setlist signed by all of the members of the band, except the bassist. I asked the keyboardist if he had been with Sugarloaf, citing how he played Green-Eyed lady in warmups, but he told me, no he wasn't. I complimented him on Chest Fever, and he thanked me for that. He did do a really good job on that song. The Opening band was going to play another set after Crow's set, but we had to hit the road. Maybe if I had been a little more impressed, I would have stayed. We wanted to get the hell out of that state (especially since I got sexually assaulted by a biker during the Crow set), and we made it to Menominee, WI and went to the local bars to see if we could find a warm place to sleep. Unfortunately, there were no takers, and we had to sleep in a local park. We only slept for about 3 hours before the sunlight awoke me from my slumber. Had a little "Wake & Bake" session, and we were ready to hit the road.

Aside from the homosexual ass-grabbing, it was a flawless journey. Heck, those BBQ wings were worth the trip alone!
