Chris Bct The HATES formed right after the one guy's whose been in the band all these years, guitarist/vocalist Christian A. saw the SEX PISTOLS in Texas on their infamous 1978 tour. They've never broken up. He's gone through 10 to 20 different drummers and base players tho. The band had never toured except a one off show in L.A. and a handful of shows very near Houston, their hometown. I'd been a fan since hearing their 3 slower singles from 1979. They did one of the best punk records of the 90's, a cassette only release in 1991 New World Oi!, 15 songs. A German punk label did a CD release of that along with the three 79 7"s and a remix, much improved musically (thankfully) of their Panacea 12" from about 1982 called Contamination Disc. I had occasional contact with the band over the decades ordering this single and that one. We told each other we'd stop in if went to the other guy's town one day. When I went to order their last 3 releases in late 2003 I asked if they'd ever toured. Christian said no but he'd like to. So from the comfort of my computer at home I arranged the entire tour for them with the help of the Maximum Rock 'n Roll tour info site. Toured out to be 10 shows in 10 days Houston to an annual punk festival in San Antonio as I recall, Tucson, Phoenix, Las Vegas, L.A., this San Diego show and an S.F. show. The band ended up making good contacts in Tucson and Phoenix and have gone back to have some one off shows there. His drummer had been in the band about a year if I'm not mistaken and the base player just like 3 months. The show the night before this one, which, I brought my same tape deck but no blank tape!!! was with the URINALS. Sadly, only like 50 folks there. It was stunning. Like this show they played a number of those great songs from the late 70's but faster. The L.A. show at the Smell in downtown (the arm pit of downtown, the club opened on an alley and the only citizens around were bums, God bless 'em) was one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. To finally see one of my all time favorite bands live after bein' a fan for 27 years, was heady and they more than delivered. This San Diego show they tried to do other songs and it wasn't as tight. They accomodated me and my friend who drove from San Diego to see the L.A. show by playing me and his favorite HATES song each at this S.D. show. A local popular punk band headlined so the Che was packed. It was the best attended show of the HATES' tour cuz few folks were familiar with them outside of Houston. The kids really responded. Genuine guys. We had a great time in San Diego that evening, no question.
