Dick Fari?a & Eric von Schmidt F-LEUT/7 with Ethan Signer and occasionally Blind Boy Grunt (Bob Dylan) 1. Johnny Cuckoo (Adapted from a children's game song learned from Bessie Jones, a Negro woman from St. Simon's Island, Georgia) 2. Jumping Judy (An Ox song, sometimes called DRIVE IT ON, from the unaccompanied singing of convicts, Cummins State Farm, Arkansas, 1934. Played in open G-tuning) 3. Glory, Glory (Traditional Negro hymn, the tune relating closely to the Southern white hymn, WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN?) 4. Old Joe's Dulcimer (A medley of dance tunes including OLD JOE CLARK, SWING AND TURN, DARLIN' COREY, etc.) 5. Wobble Bird (A variation of THE CUCKOO, in 3/4 time) 6. Wildwood Flower (Instrumental on the well known Carter Family song) 7. Overseas Stomp (In the spirit of the 1927 Memphis Jug Band) 8. Lonzo N'Howard (Learned from Tom Shoemaker of Harlan, Kentucky, who heard it there from a mountain Fiddler called Blind Jim. This is probably its first recording) 9. You Can Always Tell (A tune based on Furry Lewis' DRY LAND BLUES with extra verses) 10. Xmas Island (A twelve-bar written by Fari?a) 11. Stick With Me Baby (Played in open G-tuning. Adapted from the 1928 Furry Lewis' I WILL TURN YOUR MONEY GREEN) 12. Riddle Song (Traditional, with new answers to fit the old questions) 13. Cocaine (Learned from Rev. Gary Davis at Indian Neck, 1960) 14. London Waltz (A blues in 3/4 time, music by Fari?a, words spontaneous)
See http://www.searchingforagem.com/1964.htm (near the top of the page) for more information about this wonderful, historically important, and long out of print album. 21 year-old Bob Dylan sits in as "Blind Boy Grunt" and contributes harmonica and backup vocals. There is an extensive account of the recording sessions in "Positively 4th Street" by David Hajdu. --- Source: LP to CD transfer (details unknown) > EAC v0.9 prebeta 7 win > WavTrim 2.0 win > mkwACT v0.97 beta 1 win > shntool v1.01 win (fixed SBEs) On the original CD I received, there were two second gaps between tracks. This resulted in track transitions of the form: short digital pop two second gap short digital pop I had no way of obtaining a clean copy, so I used WavTrim to remove the two second gaps. The resulting tracks all have short digital pops between tracks. It's not perfect, but it's better than what I started with. The pops are somewhat camouflaged by the crackling of the vinyl.

In late March of 1963, Bob and then girlfriend Susan Rotolo walked into WBAI radio station in New York during the Bob Fass show. The roughly one-hour recording includes several conversations (with Dylan posing variously as Rory Grossman, Rumple Billy Burp, Elvis Bickel, and Frog Rugster). Fass plays acetates of several tracks from the unreleased Freewheelin', and other music. Featuring General Franco, Bob Dylan and Susan Rotolo.

This was a stellar release in 1990, though most of the material is now available as official release in better quality. There is a vinyl noise throughout, though it is by no means intrusive. An 8 page booklet contains seven full color, full page photos. The Label is not listed, so the series name "The Early Years" has been adopted to represent the Label. The title plays on the song "Seven Curses", and the fact that there are 12 tracks on the release. The final track, however, is 3 listens at the same 25 second answering machine purported to be Dylan. (It's not). Because this is now a retro-active pirate release, it should be left to the completeist.

Town Hall: Ramblin' Through The World (adapted from Guthrie) Bob Dylan's Dream Tomorrow Is A Long Time Bob Dylan's New Orleans Rag Masters Of War Walls Of Red Wing Hero Blues Who Killed Davey Moore? With God On Our Side
The obscure Banjo Tape has never sounded better. Long thought to have come from a home recording by Gill Turner, it is now thought to have been recorded on February 8th at Folk City. Happy Traum sings harmony and plays the banjo (from whence the recording derived its' name). Gill Turner provides harmony on the final track. The Town Hall tape is a 'must-have' for fans of early Dylan. The concert was line recorded directly from the soundboard, and several tracks were intended for an ill-fated live CBS LP. Two tracks eventually did see official release. 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' on 'Greatest Hits 2' and 'Masterpieces', and 'Last Thoughts On Woody' (wisely omitted on this release) on 'The Bootleg Series 1-3". Three other tracks from that show that were left off of this disc are 'Dusty Old Fairgrounds', 'All Over You', and 'John Brown'. It was a mistake leaving them off, and including a pirate track of 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time'.

Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie * Lay Down Your Weary Tune Dusty Old Fairgrounds * John Brown * When the Ship Comes In Who Killed Davy Moore? Percy's Song Bob Dylan's New Orleans Rag * Seven Curses
The material presented here is an absolute must-have to any collection. It has been available for many years, but this package blows away every release that has come before. This is the one to own. CBS was planing this release during the 1963-64 Christmas season, and it went as far as being pressed to acetate. It has long been rumored that the LP cover was completed as well, and this CD purports to be a reproduction of it. It is a beautiful cover, and leaves little doubt to it's authenticity. The thorn seems to have been the rambling 6Ω minute prose "Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie". A song missing from Carnegie is Talkin' John Birch. It, along with this version of Who Killed Davy Moore? was released on the official CBS release Bootleg Series Vol 1-3. The recording has been filtered and EQ'd for this release, and the result is near perfection. The overall aesthetics, quality, and material of this package make it one of the best CD boots ever produced. The Colessum version has a slightly nicer disc, as all songs are listed with a one word title. Learn more about the planned CBS release at Searching For A Gem Acetate of the unreleased CBS LP "In Concert" Carnegie Hall - October 26, 1963 Except: * NYC Town Hall - April 12, 1963
