Deep Roots Music

1982 was arguably the absolute peak of pure roots reggae music before the cruder ragamuffin and dancehall styles came into vogue. 'Deep Roots Music' was a series of 6 hour specials made at the time for the newly opened Channel 4 in the UK by director Howard Johnson. The series, which includes plentiful archival footage, much supplied by Pepe Judah of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, was absolutely remarkable at the time, when very little Jamaican culture had ever appeared on British television. Held together by skanking segues from Mikey Dread the cutting is often evocative of sound system style with extensive part 2's to some segments.
