Part I: Forward March We start in 1962 when the fever of independence spreads over the island, people dancing to just invented ska, exuberant dance music through the sound systems in Kingston and finally ended up in Britain in late 1960, albeit with a more poppy sound, the first heyday of reggae. We end with The Harder They Come (the first - and best - reggae film starring Jimmy Cliff) and the groundbreaking band Bob Marley & The Wailers in the British pop program The Old Grey Whistle Test. We follow the rise and fall of Shabba (Mr. Loverman ") Ranks in the U.S., and we hear how reggae influenced hip hop and the emergence of new roots music in Jamaica.
