Notes: | taper's comments: "This is the already much talked about show from this year's Frequency festival in Salzburg, Austria. The show that inspired Trent Reznor to post on the official site the message saying "Worst performance with the worst crowd by far this tour." with a picture of a NIN backstage pass and a sausage (wurst in german). What had happened? Traditionally NIN has always received a wonderful reception in Austria, why not this time? The most obvious reason is certainly the running order they have been booked in. In between the Beatsteaks (german fun rock band) and Die Ärzte (another german fun rock band with fanatic fans) it spelled disaster from the moment I saw the running order. With the festival having a wavebreaker in the front with limited access, many of the Beatsteakes and Ärzte fans tried to get in very early that day and never planned on leaving, making NIN fans not being able to enter for the show of their heroes.
However that was not all. Not only did they not participate in the NIN show (silent apathy, polite applause would have been ok), but they also sat down right in front of the stage! Just listen to Trent screaming frantically "GET THE FUCK UP!" before March Of The Pigs, following it up with an unbelieveably aggresive performance of the song. Him and Aaron ran all over the place. The Ärzte fans didnt care one bit and decided to sing "We want to see Die Ärzte" during "Something I Can Never Have", which is beyond bold. Well, after "The Wretched" Trent had enough and asked the fuckers what they are even doing here with their bored shitty looks on their faces. Of course he was right when he asked" Let me guess, we got booked between two german bands?" Yup, you were. The NIN fans in attendance tried hard but they were mostly way back behind the first wavebreaker. You can hear it on the recording, there was quite a bit of clapping and cheering going on, but Trent was so pissed off with the first few rows he didnt really seem to care or notice. After "Head Like A Hole" the technicians put up his keyboard and microphone in expectation of him playing "Hurt" but instead the lights went on and the sound guy hastily carried the keyboard back out again. The recording itself turned out ok. There was some rain during the set so I had to pull up my hood which muffled the sound a little here and there. Still a nice recording but far from perfect. While Trent said this was the worst performance I would disagree. Anything out of the ordinary is something special, good or bad. This was something special for sure, I hope you enjoy this moment captured on tape." although not as good as 2007/08/11 from this taper, this recording still offers a well balanced & rich listening experience. more crowd noise, with a layer of quiet(ish) banter throughout the softer songs, and some interferance with rain (you can hear it hitting the mics, but it is far from distracting). a quick drop out in suck, otherwise a flawless capture. |
