Daspy Notes:
Night 5 of 6 of the Ben Harper, Trombone Shorty and Jessy Wilson tour.
I woke up, loaded the car and took off for Portland. Given it was a holiday
weekend traffic was a problem but made it to the motel I was renting, dropped
off my things and organized the gear for the show. Since I was in Maine I
picked up 2 lobster rolls, ate one and drove up to the venue. I met some
folks I knew on line and waited for doors to open. Another easy one to navigate
but then had to set up the gear. This venue was basically an outdoor field on
the end of some land surrounded by water. The only place to set up the gear was
in a port a pottie but one has to do what one has to do. It was a late arriving
crowd so when Jessy Wilson came on stage there was no one around me. Over the
set more people arrived so it wasn't too obvious. This was the best set she did
on the run of shows in my opinion. The vibe of the crowd and the environment
really helped. The sound was great and the temperature was comfortable. By the
time Trombone Shhorty came on the crowd had filled in but wasn't uncomfortable.
Their set was one of the best too. High energy and the crowd was really into it.
The energy that was lacking in Boston up front was back as it was GA and the real
fans made to the front. I was completely solo but ran into a couple who I chatted
with between sets and they recommended a local donut place where the donuts were
made from potatoes that I had to stop at in the morning. By the time Ben Harper
started they had moved on and I was by myself in my zone. The Ben Harper set was
high energy and fun. While the setlist was pretty much the same, everything was
played well and the crowd was into it. The finale was Glory and Consequence
and this time it was planned and played to perfection. After the show I knew I
had to go to Tanglewood the next night. My original plan was to do tourist stuff
in Maine and eat lobster but Maine was packed with tourists and I wanted one more
show. I got back to the motel, picked up some food and passed out. Needed to get
sleep since I had a 4 1/2 hour drive and was going to do 6 shows in 7 nights.
