10/31/73

The Record Plant
Sausalito, CA
shn Soundboard reel -> ??? -> CD This is the correct date for the show that's often mislabeled 12/73 KSAN radio broadcast - the air date was 12/02/73 but it was recorded on 10/31/73. This was recorded shortly after the Wailers were kicked off the Sly & The Family Stone tour for actually drawing more attention than Sly. They were stranded and the K-SAN station booked them at the Matrix Club as well as giving them this Radio time. Lineup: Bob Marley: Guitar and Vocals Peter Tosh: Rhythm Guitar and Vocal Earl 'Wire' Lindo: Keyboards Aston 'Family Man' Barrett: Bass Carlton Barrett: Drums "Walk The Proud Land" is the same song as "Rude Boy", with slightly different text written by Bunny Wailer, but here Bob is singing his lyrics version, so it's called "Rude Boy". After "Rastaman Chant" there's the instrumental jam of "Keep The Faith".

Private Party
Hinesburg, VT
cd,shn dsbd Rob Dasaro - keys, vocals Steve Drebber - drums, vocals Jim Tasse - bass, vocals with special guests Trey Anastasio - guitar "Mr. Charlie" Frazier - blues harp Background on the show & cds, provided by Steve Drebber : Two days before Doctor Jones was supposed to play at this private party our guitar player Casey Grant's father-in-law died suddenly. We knew our college friend Trey was going to be at the party and asked if he would play a few songs with us to fill the guitar slot. Trey showed up and encouraged everyone to to try mezcal shots with listerine cool mint gel tabs on their tongues. Trey dubbed the new drink sensation a "chrysalis". The mezcal combined with some excellent brownies inspired the interpration of the music. Trey had never heard the original tunes that we ran through that night, and probably had not played many of the cover tunes in years. The show is loose but provides several moments of great jamming. It is an interesting historical document at any rate. Presently there are fewer than 20 copies in circulation (Jan 2003).

2400 Fulton Street - Jefferson Airplane House
San Francisco, CA
cd,shn Source Detail Source: SBD > MR > Cass > DAT > CDR > WAV > CDR; via EAC/trade from Morgan Evans > EAC > CDWAV > SHN; via Rick Lepley Notes: Great disc! The sound quality is exceptional IMO, it almost sounds like it was recorded in a studio setup. The lineup is reportedly the following: Jerry Garcia - Guitar Jorma Kaukonen - Guitar Jack Cassady - Bass Mickey Hart - Percussion Spencer Dryden - Percussion Known Flaws: A high pitched tone which was present on my CDR copy at roughly 0:12 - 0:23 of track 01 was edited out using EAC's wave editing function. A 1-second pause at about 14:19-14:20 on the master dt06 was edited out also using EAC. Much thanks to Morgan Evans for putting this gem into my hands! Uploaded and distributed by Andy Lepley These shn files are seekable in your shnamp. Please forward any information/corrections to lepleyr@hotmail.com - Thanks! Lineup: Jerry Garcia - Guitar, Jorma Kaukonen - Guitar, Jack Cassady - Bass, Mickey Hart - Percussion, Spencer Dryden - Percussion

The jam after Camel Walk may have been Back Porch Boogie Blues. Spanish Flea included an introduction of the band members. Don’t Want You No More was not performed in its entirety, as it lacked the final lyrics. The lengthy percussion jam featured a guest appearance from Marc Daubert. Mike recalls that there were approximately 200 people in the audience. This gig featured the first known version of Slave to the Traffic Light and Fluffhead, the first known Phish versions of Fire, Don't Want You No More, Cities, and Skippy the Wondermouse, and the only known Phish version of Spanish Flea. This performance was on the upstairs level of Nectar's.

Ian McLean's Farm
Hebron, NY
shn Source Detail purportedly SBD> Cass> DAT, however what circulates is really a high-quality AUD from taper E. Larson, mislabelled as SBD (thanks to M. Pearson, C. Dirksen for correction); transfer: dat> za2 > soundforge> cdwav; silences between songs removed; very full 3 discs; via J. Sellers; etreed via B. Mohr [1] First known Phish performance. [2] Restarted after the opening lyric. [3] First known performance. [4] Extended intro. [5] Freestyle reggae rapping from Trey. [6] Unfinished. This show is mislabeled on many recordings as 8/27/87. Teases were everywhere, including a Trench Town Rock quote from Trey before Hood, a Whipping Post tease from Fish and a Jingle Jangle Jingle tease from Trey after HYHU, a full band Sneakin' Sally tease before Golgi, a Smoke on the Water tease after Sparks, La Bamba lyrics in the Low Rider Jam, as well as a full band HYHU tease and a Slipknot! tease from Trey before McGrupp. Harpua was played by request and was restarted after the opening lyric, which was repeated. The intro to Sparks was extended while Fish relieved himself. McGrupp was introduced as "The Gala Event." The third set was heavy on jamming and light on lyrics. Trey delivered some freestyle reggae rapping before and during the Makisupa Jam that some fans have labeled the “Mouse House Rap.” Mike's included a DEG tease from Trey. David Bowie contained a Tom Sawyer tease and was unfinished. This show contained the first known performances of Bundle of Joy and BBFCFM and the first known Phish performance of HYHU.

After the opening, Les did a rap about a weed or something like that. Then more Harpua and the Jimmy story (Jimmy and Poster Nutbag going to Vegas). They stop and camp. At the campsite, they start yodeling, at which point John McEuen, Heather and Anamiekl August did a country/yodel tune. The story continues, Jimmy and Poster meet up with four Elvis' on the edge of Las Vegas and have a duel. The four Elvis's sing the first few verses of "Suspicious Minds" and then Fishman continues. Jimmy is victorious. Then the dog and cat fight occurs. Harpua wins and the song finishes. At some point everyone returns and then Brian Mantia, the drummer for Primus, shows up for "Suzy Greenberg." "Suzie Q" is lead by one of the Elvis'.

FLAC AUD > Cass/? > CDR Space Antelope was Trey's high school band. This show doesn't sound too bad considering its age and rarity. Trey sings on "All along the Watchtower" but it is unclear if he sings anything else other than backing vocals on other songs. You can pick him out during the banter between the band and the crowd though. Highlights include "All Along the Watchtower", "Franklin's Tower", Rush's "Hemispheres" and a trippy "Fluff's Travels". This is a rare piece of Phishtory and all you diehards ought to love it. Enjoy this treat!!!! - Weaselfee ;^) The Space Antelope lineup: Steve Pollack (The Dude of Life) - vocals Trey Anastasio - guitar and vocals Rob "Flash" Gordon - guitar and vocals Dud Taft - bass Doug Parsons - drums * Blues song, not "Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad" (which is covered by the Grateful Dead) ^ Rush cover # Lou Reed cover, not The Doors' song.

(crowd went nuts). Then trey said, I'm originally from Jersey, I don't know what to say, what comment would you say about that??" Tony reminded him the Garden State, and Trey, apparently not clearly hearing Tony responded, "the Garbage state?" he then said "New Jersey is for turn pikes i guess." #### Trey solo acoustic % With Dave Matthews. Dave played guitar on Everyday and Three Little Birds. For the last 2 songs Dave just stood at the mic and sang. * Dave Matthews Band song from the album of the same name released this week ** Just Trey and Dave. Bob Marley cover from Exodus. Phish has played this song once, 6/17/95 Gainesville, VA with Dave Matthews and Leroi Moore. *** John Lennon cover **** Sly and the Family Stone cover
