Jimi Hendrix’s “Cry of Love Tour” features a valuable excavation live sound source!
THIS IS THE EVENING SHOW.
Recorded is a performance at Norman OU (University of Oklahoma) Field House, Oklahoma on May 8, 1970 from a high-quality audience recording master. The trio with Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell captures the enthusiastic performances including the “Stars and Stripes Forever-Purple Haze” medley similar to Woodstock with good sound quality.
the second set, roughly 75-minutes in length featured renditions of “Fire,” “Spanish Castle Magic,” “Machine Gun,” “Lover Man,” “Foxey Lady,” “Hear My Train A Comin’,” “Message To Love,” “Red House,” “Star Spangled Banner,” “Purple Haze,” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return).” Jimi Hendrix is photographed during The Experience’s May 8, 1970 performance at the Field House at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma.
Legendary rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix played two sold-out concerts at the OU Field House on May 8, 1970.
The concert came as anti-Vietnam War tensions were heightened on U.S. college campuses. OU had its share of campus protests.
Four days earlier, on May 4, 1970, Ohio Army National Guard troops opened fire on student protesters at Kent State University, killing four and wounding 9 others.
Shows were at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. After he left Norman he played to crowds in Fort Worth and San Antonio. Hendrix died of a drug overdose on Sept. 18, 1970 in London.
