Neither "France" nor "Serengetti" were ever played live. * outtake from Shakedown sessions. I added some crowd noise and reverb, and dirtied up the sound a bit to try and give it a live feel. Back in 2006 I put together a series of "Live" albums but this was one that I never did. Why? It was probably because the album is dominated by a couple of songs that I'm not particularly fond of. I don't know why but every time I listen to Shakedown it reminds me of a hen running round the yard, clucking for all it's worth, and being chased by an amorous rooster LOL. And why now? It's because I recently had a hard drive fail and the originals were on it. In the process of recovering them I decided that it might be fun to finish the project. So here, getting on for 8 years since I started, is the final one. These are all audience recordings apart from "France". These tracks have been chosen because they are fairly contemporary to the album's release date. They have all been changed in some way for the purpose of this compilation. * = Only time played that year + = Brief volume reduction from the 2:30 to 2:45 mark of Jack Straw ++ = w/ Lee Oskar on harmonica, painful patch at the end +++ = w/ Lee Oskar, first "Mojo Jam" (contains "Mind Left Body Jam" theme) - Dick Latvala considered the 9/2 Scarlet-Fire and the 10/21 Stella Blue to be among the finest, if not the best, versions of those songs ever played. - I'm sure people will take issue with the fact there is nothing here from Egypt, but I think it's pretty much a consensus that those shows did not produce the best music. - Unlike '77, no China-Riders, Bird Songs, Help-Slips, High Times, Brokedowns or China Dolls were played in '78. Notes: This compilation is a collection of my favorite Grateful Dead performances from 1978. The 85 tracks I selected are reflective of my own personal tastes. I did not call it "Best of 1978" to imply that it's anywhere near the definitive word. I simply wanted to group together what I think are the greatest performances from that year. Nearly every track has a soundboard source, although there are two audience tracks (The Wheel and Comes a Time) as they were only played once that year and only audience sources circulate. The Countdown Intro and Sugar Magnolia from New Year's Eve is an FM Master Recording. I performed no additional editing, so needless to say not every transition is seamless here. There are unavoidable dead air spots and noticeably different levels of sound quality, however overall I'm pretty happy with how the segues all turned out. The only repeated tracks in the compilation are Scarlet-Fire as I'm fond of both of the versions here, and both are widely considered to be the best from that year, and Sugar Magnolia as I wanted to capture the moment of New Year's. The compilation generally moves from first set songs (Discs 1-3) to second set songs (Discs 4-9). Hope you enjoy this "1978 Box Set" as much as I enjoyed putting it together!!
