Seed discs courtesy of Andy Lemieux 8^) Thanks! (Extraction and.shn encoding by Seth Kaplan via EAC and MKW. Accurate extraction and properly aligned sector boundaries verified via EAC and .shntool) From Deadlists: COMMENTS There are brief difficulties with the PA during Cold Rain which occur again at the beginning of the first attempt at Mama Tried and bring it to a halt. After a pause for repairs they start this tune over. Hard To Handle cuts off near its conclusion on the master, as does Dancin. Lovelight cuts in near its beginning. The jam in fast 8s interpolated into That's It is extraordinary. Plainly the four-show run at Fillmore West with Miles Davis inspired an extra measure of adventure. The old partial DeadBase list and also a more complete list supplied by Rob Eaton have a China Cat > Rider before Mama Tried but these don't show up on the circulating tape and may be erroneous. Eaton lists: 04/15/70 Winterland Arena, San Francisco Ca - complete 4.9, 102min, Sbd, A0D1, Reel M->Dat 1, 44k 7inch Master Reel@7.5ips 1/2trk->3700 x 0->3800 x 1 * Filler: Grateful Dead Family Dog at the Great Highway San Francisco CA February 04,1970 Lineage: MSR>C>D>CD Tracks 2-7 ** - Two added tracks sourced from PBS TV broadcast 1. Jefferson Airplane and Santana) ** 9:29 Total time: 46:15 Recorded by PBS at the Family Dog on 02-04-70 and originally broadcast on 12-13-70 for a television documentary entitled, "San Francisco Rock: A Night At The Family Dog" filmed at the Family Dog on 02-04-70. The China > Rider has been matched with this date but the rest of the setlist does not match either Deadbase or Deadlists which also lists a 06:26 Hard to Handle prior to China > Rider and notes that sets were also performed by the Jefferson Airplane and Santana. The St. Stephen > NFA > St. Stephen > Midnight Hour following China > Rider is continuous with the China > Rider in terms of the source quality, crowd and overall musical feel. Accordingly, it appears that this is all one set. Hard to Handle and the "All Star Jam" included here and sourced from the PBS TV broadcast were missing from the previously circulating tape. There has been some confusion about this tape where it was initially labeled as 08-30-70, which was a KQED broadcast called Calibration. This is a well-documented show though, and the set list is completely different from the one above. Seth Kaplan (Sdk022769@aol.com)

Matt Vernon | SHN | 2 | sbd Kaplan seed with some additional tunes compared to some of the prior seeds [2007-09-15]Very good sound quality and mix. Garcia's guitar on H2H is out of tune. Deadlists (Powell) makes a strong positive comment about "The jam in fast 8s interpolated into That's It is extraordinary". It is interesting but not a life changing experience described in these LMA reviews "But it's the Other One suite that follows which makes you really pay attention. Unique as far as I know because of a rocking jam they insert between drums and the thundering bass Phil usually starts them off with, it has to be experienced to be believed. The energy comes from the drum solo (really from CR&S) which I normally can take or leave, but this one picks up a fire half way through that feels like the band just couldn't wait to layer something on top. The Jam that follows is unlike anything I've heard. Maybe a mix of the frenetic Other One and a Spanish jam. It's the motivation for me typing this review. Then as if that wasn't enough a great Other One follows." or this one "Reviewer: jjoops - - June 1, 2004 Subject: absolutely essential. This is an incredible recording and an all-time great performance. Among many many noteworthy items is the crazy jam preceding the other one. If I could only bring 6 or so minutes of music to the proverbial desert island, that unique and utterly maniacal jam might just be it. Get it."
Matthew Kupchinsky | CDR-FLAC | 1 | MSR>DAT>CD>EAC>SHN (mkwACT) | Notes: -Cold Rain and Snow fades in at the start of the tune -The Mama Tried fragment from the false start is missing -Hard to Handle fades out at 04:31 -Dancin’ cuts right before the end at 12:14 -Lovelight fades in during the Jam and is missing a good chunk Cold Rain And Snow, Mama Tried, Candyman, Hard To Handle and Cumberland Blues listed at Deadlists and missing from the previously circulating one disc wonder are included here. (reference shind=6444) ____________________________________________________________________________ Comments per Deadlists: -There are brief difficulties with the PA during Cold Rain which occur again at the beginning of the first attempt at Mama Tried and bring it to a halt. After a pause for repairs they start this tune over. -Hard To Handle cuts off near its conclusion on the master, -Dancin cuts off near its conclusion on the master. -Lovelight cuts in near its beginning. -The Jam in fast 8s interpolated into That's It is extraordinary. -A third guitarist sits in, and also someone on keyboards, and someone on congas (starting from during the first drums). -Plainly the four-show run at Fillmore West with Miles Davis inspired an extra measure of adventure. -The old partial DeadBase list and also a more complete list supplied by Rob Eaton have a China Cat > Rider before Mama Tried but these don't show up on the circulating tape and may be erroneous.
