After Dear Mrs. Reagan, Trey introduced "Alex," a new waitress at Nectar's. I Didn't know featured Fish on trombone. Happy Birthday was dedicated to Trey's sister Kristy, who was running lights for the show, "Roz," and "Meg." He brought Kristy, "Roz," and Del Martin (because "Meg" was not there) on stage. This show featured the first known Phish performance of Phase Dance. Mockingbird also made its debut at this show and was played without Forbin’s. Before Whipping Post, Trey introduced Lizards as "Where Have All the Lizards Gone?" Suzy was stopped in its intro with Trey jokingly saying "good night" before restarting the song. Soundcheck: Golgi Apparatus SET 1: Funky Bitch, Golgi Apparatus, Peaches en Regalia, Take the 'A' Train > Possum, Phase Dance, Good Times Bad Times, Skin It Back, David Bowie
Wilson, I Didn't Know, Fluffhead, Fire, Fee, You Enjoy Myself > Divided Sky, AC/DC Bag > Whipping Post, Slave to the Traffic Light ENCORE: Big Black Furry Creature from Mars
BBFCM
This show was an ATO Pledge Party and previously circulated as September 27, 1987. Trey teased Who Knows in Fire and DEG in Whipping Post. There was a third set to this show but copies do not circulate and no list is known. Some copies of this show in circulation are incomplete and out of order. These copies are usually mislabeled as “Pledge Party, Burlington, VT.” Other copies circulate with the complete recording (except for BBFCFM) but have Slave before Bowie; this order is incorrect. Good Times Bad Times, Slave to the Traffic Light, and Big Black Furry Creature From Mars were shot from a video by (or for) Mike. It is unclear whether BBFCFM closed the set or was the encore because a recording of it does not circulate. Setlist incomplete. A third set was played. Notes from Scott Judd, a member of the ATO Fraternity House where this show was performed: This performance has circulated dated 09/27/87. Charlie Dirksen from Phish.net suggested that various musical elements of this show, along with the presence of a few videos in the band's archive, almost certainly dated this show to Feb 20, 1988. With this information, along with input from several friends who were also in attendance, we concluded with a high degree of certainty that 2/20/88 is the correct date, replacing the originally listed date of 9/27/87. The presence of Phase Dance (Pat Metheny) was a key distinguishing factor in correcting the date, as this song was only performed by Phish four times, all in Feb. 1988. Charlie also noted that this particular arrangement of Fluffhead is consistent with the revised date, and would NOT have been consistent with Sept. '87 renditions. Given the corrected date of 2/20/88, prior notes about this tape containing the first ever version of I Didn't Know have been removed. Charlie Dirksen tells me the band's archive contains as-yet-unseen video of Good Times Bad Times, Slave to the Traffic Light, and BBFCM from this show, presumably shot with Mike Gordon's personal video camera. BBFCM does not appear on any circulating recordings, but is vaguely recollected to have come from a short third set on this date. This was one of Phish's first shows outside of Vermont. Our fraternity (ATO), having completely exhausted the limited stock of quality area bands at prior events, hired Phish with no prior knowledge of their music, not even so much as a demo, based on a recommendation from a friend-of-a-friend in Burlington, VT. I had the good fortune of assisting the band with load-in and setup, which resulted in a private performance of Golgi Aparatus during soundcheck. Needless to say I was mightily impressed, and spent much of my evening spreading the word to friends about the upcoming show.

Funky Bitch, Fluffhead, The Curtain[1] > You Enjoy Myself, I Didn't Know[2], The Lizards, Wilson > Peaches en Regalia, Golgi Apparatus > Slave to the Traffic Light, Corinna, Fee > David Bowie
Mustang Sally[3], Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley [4], Sanity, La Grange, Harry Hood
[1] First known Curtain without "With." [2] Fish on trombone. [3] John Carlton on drums. [4] John Carlton on drums and Fish on trombone. This is the first known Curtain without “With.” The second set listing may be incomplete. The first two songs of the second set featured John Carlton on drums. I Didn't Know and Sneakin’ Sally featured Fish on trombone. Mike dedicated Mustang Sally to Abe Vigoda "because it's his birthday today" and later introduced La Grange as being by Vigoda.

Fluffhead, Dinner and a Movie, Harry Hood, The Ballad of Curtis Loew[2], Harpua, AC/DC Bag > Alumni Blues > Run Like an Antelope[4]
[1] First known Phish performance. [2] Bobby Brown on harmonica. [3] No vocal jam. [4] Trey spoke the names "Marco Esquandolas... Poster Nutbag... Moses Heaps... Moses DeWitt." This show featured the only known Phish performance of The Chicken. Sneakin’ Sally and Curtis Loew featured Bobby Brown on harmonica. Bowie began with a tease medley that included Timber, Alumni Blues, Smoke on the Water, Sunshine of Your Love, Money, Whipping Post, and several others. YEM did not contain a vocal jam. Trey teased Entrance of the Gladiators and spat out the names “Marco Esquandolas... Poster Nutbag... Moses Heaps... Moses DeWitt” during Antelope. Dinner and a Movie was dedicated to “our good friend Susannah.” Lizards was delayed, as Trey cut on Fish for losing his drumsticks during the gig; Lizards subsequently included a theme from I Dream of Jeanie tease. Some recordings that circulate are mislabeled “The Base Lounge.”

"This was the final show of a 7-night tour in Telluride and Aspen, a compilation of which was released in 2006 as “Colorado ’88”. The compilation as released does not contain any material from 8/6/88 Aspen because there are no tapes in the archives. The setlist from this show is unknown but it is confirmed that this show took place at a small, below-ground venue in Aspen. Paul recalled the venue owner asked him to turn the P.A. down during the show. While there are some photographs from this show, no other information is available about this gig. The first 4 tracks are early mixes from the first Junta recording session from 1987. The rest of this material is live from 1987-1988. The only exact date that I could figure out was Blue Bossa, which is from 7/23/88. The rest of this live material is from various dates in 1988. Before Sloth, an announcer states that this is from "their second gig in Boston" Feel free to email me with any more info on any of these tracks if you have any. This was a demo that was circulated around to bars/clubs to try to score gigs. As far as I know, this entire demo with the exception of d1t07 and the Junta tracks is new to circulation. I included the Junta tracks because this is a demo from 1988, and Junta wasn't officially released until May of 1989, and I believe that these may be early mixes of those tracks, that were in circulation prior to the release of the actual Junta cassette.
